(Jn 8:1-11). The dilemma posed to Christ was should the adulteress be stoned or not? If he had said to stone her he was cruel; if he said not to stone her, he was indulgent. If he said to stone her he betrayed his own teaching of forgiveness, if he said not to stone her he betrayed Moses and God’s law. If he said to stone her the Roman state could arrest him, because they denied the right of capital punishment (killing a criminal) to the Jews. If he said not to stone her, the Jewish authorities had a case against him because Moses ordered stoning for adultery. This causes us to reflect on Jesus’ answer to the dilemma we all face of evil. The dilemma seems to me to be yes or no? A Yes to evil condones it; no condemns it. The Sadducees, the liberals of their day, condoned some evils, while the Pharisees, the conservatives of their day, condemned all evils. How did Jesus distinguish himself from both of these groups in one stroke?
Easy, one word ~FORGIVENESS~
Forgiveness doesn’t condemn or condone. It admits evil is evil; it doesn’t say “there’s nothing to forgive” like the bland indifference of pop psychology, it dissolves the glue between the sinner and the sin and sets the sinner free. To love evil is to become evil, to succumb to it. But to hate evil is also to succumb to it because you can never overcome self righteousness or hate the sin without ending up hating the sinner. To hate at all is to become hard and dark and negative; even hating evil hardens us into haters.
The Scriptures do not offer much advice on family problems, but we can pick up clues. In the father of the Prodigal Son we have Jesus' model of what it is to be a parent. He is not overprotective. He allows his son the freedom to follow his own dream rather than his father's, to take risks and to make mistakes. He is still there for the son who has made a fool of himself and brought shame on the family. He absorbs the jealousy and anger of the older son but does not yield to him. He shows what it is to be a man: there when he is needed; faithful to wife and children; able for lifelong commitment; nurturing, forgiving, patient, and aware that children can learn from their mistakes. He does not blame himself. When the boy is bursting with rehearsed self-reproaches (‘I have sinned against heaven. I am not worthy to be called your son.' Luke 15:21), the father has no time for them. Instead he blesses and heals. Children shy away from parents who blame themselves for their children's failures. We hate to be made to feel a disappointment to those we love. And we hate them to feel guilty over happenings that were not their fault. But we warm to the parent who, without any illusions about what has happened, is still ready to fall on our necks and kill the fatted calf.
‘Abba', meaning Daddy, is one of the Hebrew words we may have all heard, not just in the name of the Swedish pop group, in Saint Paul's letter to the Romans. ‘The Spirit you have received is the spirit of children, and it makes us cry out, ‘Abba! Father!' (Romans 8:15) At times we can feel lost and think that nobody cares if we are alive or dead. Prayer becomes difficult, and we are thrown back on our own weakness. Saint Paul takes up the theme, ‘The Spirit comes to help us in our weakness. For when we cannot choose words in order to pray properly, the Spirit himself expresses our plea in a way that could never be put into words, and God who knows everything in our hearts knows perfectly well what he means.' (Romans 8:26) In old age, and in sickness, prayer does not become easier, and Saint Paul's words matter more and more. We have a place in God's mind. God knows everything in our hearts. There is a constant bond of love and communication between the Holy Spirit in us and God in heaven. When we pray we try to tune in to that communication.
