HISTORY
Midnight Groove Multimedia started in 1989 as Midnight Groove Recordings, in Boston, MA as an independent label specializing in acid jazz and soul recordings. Midnight Groove’s first release was “Her Groove” by The Nubian in April of 1990. The spoken-word dance track received positive attention and reviews from Afro-Beat, House and Rare Groove DJs in the USA, UK, France, and Germany.
In 1992, Midnight Groove Filmworks emerged with the short comedy, Leroy Dubwise P.I.. “Dubwise,” -a comic detective spoof that featured Black actors on screen and white actors doing the voices- became a festival favorite. From that project, Midnight Groove went on to produce commercials, public service announcements, and documentaries for various organizations and businesses, including the Massachusetts Department of Public Health and the NAACP of Cape Cod; as well as short experimental films for multimedia installations in art galleries. In 1999, the name of the operation was changed to Midnight Groove Multimedia with the recordings and filmworks as divisions.
In 2001, MGM released Jazzy-Soul Club Grooves, by Mwalim, a limited-edition, vinyl 12” E.P. that yielded two, instant classics among Afro-beat, House, Acid Jazz, and Rare Groove DJs: Out of the Woods and Will I Ever.
