Our Party

The Liberty & Democracy Party is the libertarian representative in Australian politics. It is the only political organization which respects you as a unique and competent individual.

Free & Independent

Libertarians believe that being free and independent is a great way to live. We want a system which encourages all people to choose what they want from life; that lets them live, love, work, play, and dream their own way.

Caring for People

The Libertarian way is a caring, people-centered approach to politics. We believe each individual is unique. We want a system which respects the individual and encourages us to discover the best within ourselves and develop our full potential.

Principled; Consistent

The Libertarian way is a logically consistent approach to politics based on the moral principle of self-ownership. Each individual has the right to control his or her own body, action, speech, and property. Government's only role is to help individuals defend themselves from force and fraud.

Tolerant

The Liberty & Democracy Party is for all who don't want to push other people around and don't want to be pushed around themselves. Live and let live is the Libertarian way.

Australians want, and deserve, a political system which respects them as unique individuals; as people who can make their own plans, who can take responsibility for themselves, who are compassionate, and who can and will solve their own problems if allowed to do so.

Most Australians, after some thought, prefer the Libertarian option in politics. Most people in their private, non-governmental, affairs deal with each other on the libertarian premise of mutual respect. You don't threaten your neighbours with fines or gaol just because they choose careers or lifestyles different than yours.

Let's hold government to the same standard. Protect us and our rights, and give us the respect we deserve.

What is Libertarianism?

LIBERTARIANS support maximum liberty in both personal and economic matters. They advocate a much smaller government; one that is limited to protecting individuals from coercion and violence. Libertarians tend to embrace individual responsibility, oppose government bureaucracy and taxes, promote private charity, tolerate diverse lifestyles, support the free market, and defend civil liberties.

“I would rather be exposed to the inconveniences attending too much liberty than to those attending too small a degree of it.”(Thomas Jefferson)

Are you a Libertarian?

World's Smallest Political Quiz

LDP's Philosophy:

The LDP's position sometimes confuses those who like to apply left and right labels to political ideologies. Free trade is considered to be right-wing while drug legalisation is left-wing. Cutting tax is right-wing but defending civil liberties and gay rights is left-wing.

However, all of these positions share the common principle of decreasing the role of government. They differ from "left-wing" people who often want the government to control the economy but not our social lives, and also from "right-wing" people who want the government to control our social lives but not the economy.

Our philosophy is broadly described as libertarian or classical liberalism, although those are not necessarily precise labels.

Libertarianism, for example, can be based on two very different philosophical starting points. Some libertarians believe that free markets and individual freedom should be preferred because they are more moral political systems. Such people argue that it is immoral to take money from people by force and to tell people how to live their lives.

The other philosophical position is utilitarianism. Utilitarian libertarians believe that a small government will lead to better outcomes than a big government. Such people argue that libertarian solutions will lead to greater wealth, less poverty, more diversity and will generally make people happier.

The first philosophical position is concerned with process, while the second is concerned with outcomes. In reality, most libertarians (and most people) care about both.

Acceptance by libertarians of the rights of individuals to pursue their activities, subject to non-coercion of others, does not indicate endorsement of those activities.

LDP Federal Policies:

Civil Liberties and Individual Freedom

The LDP supports individuals' ownership of themselves and their right to pursue their own lifestyles, make their own decisions and engage in their own hobbies and interests as long as they do not directly harm other people or their property.

However, with freedom comes responsibility. The LDP believes that individuals should also take responsibility for their own decisions in life. (more...)

Competitive Federalism

The LDP supports competitive federalism as it was intended by the founders of the constitution.

Where possible, government activities should be decentralised to the State level to allow the benefits of governmental competition, policy experimentation and individual choice. This will also allow the removal of bureaucratic duplication of federal and state agencies.

Democracy

The LDP believes in a constitutional democracy.

The LDP supports voluntary voting, citizens initiated referendums, fixed parliamentary terms, the option of recall elections, constitutional protection of private property and sunset clauses on legislation. These reforms represent a tangible step forward in promoting both liberty and democracy in Australia. (more...)

Deregulate and Privatise

The LDP supports the privatisation policies of ALP and Coalition governments over the past 20 years. We believe this process should continue and support an immediate end to state and federal ownership of the ABC, SBS, Australia Post, Medibank Private, electricity generation corporations, and bus, ferry and rail services.

The LDP also supports a new round of regulation reforms modelled on the National Competition Council, focused on assessing all regulations for their impacts on productivity and economic welfare. (more...)

Energy

The LDP does not believe in either subsidising or unfairly taxing any particular source of energy. Energy is a vital element of any economy and the LDP recognises the valuable contribution the energy sector (and especially coal) makes to the Australian economy.

The LDP would not restrict nuclear energy or uranium mining in Australia. (more...)

Environment

The LDP values the natural environment within the context of a prosperous society that provides equal protection under the law and is based on respect for individual freedom, personal responsibility, small government and the defence of private property.

We recognise that societies in which government is smaller rather than bigger have produced better environmental quality and a better and fairer outcome for all members of society, including the poor. (more...)

Firearms

The LDP supports the right to own firearms for sport, hunting, collecting and self defence. (more...)

Free Trade

The LDP supports the free international trade in goods, services and capital. We are committed to achieve the APEC goals of complete free trade by 2010. (more...)

Global Warming

The LDP acknowledges that there is scientific evidence to indicate a trend towards global warming and the possibility that humans may be partly responsible. However, it does not consider governments have the competence to address the problem and looks to market responses instead. (more...)

Health

The LDP proposes to wrest back from government and return to consumers control of individual health care choices. It proposes to rescue people from a situation in which they are dependent on decisions by government to one in which they are able to make decisions for themselves and to provide for themselves.

By cutting back the proportion of health care funded directly by government and re-aligning incentives, enormous savings can be made by reducing the waste and excessive costs of a public system. At the same time, relaxation of regulatory controls will allow new organisations providing health services to emerge that will help to limit costs while improving quality. (more...)

Immigration

The LDP supports immigration and believes immigrants generally provide a net social and economic benefit to Australia. It supports expanding opportunities to live and work in Australia while carefully guarding opportunities to receive welfare or become full citizens.

The LDP also supports additional “free immigration agreements” with appropriate countries (Japan, Singapore, Canada, Sweden, etc) similar to the current agreement with New Zealand and along the same lines as “free trade agreements”. (more...) .

Labour Market Regulation

The LDP supports a free market in labour and opposes excessive labour market regulation and the minimum wage. The LDP would replace the minimum wage with a negative income tax to support low-income earners. Details are provided in the Welfare policy.

Lifestyle Choices

Adults must be free to make their own decisions without interference by the government or requiring its approval. Adults are not like children and do not need anyone to make their choices for them. They can choose where to live, which job to take, where to go on holiday and what to do with their money, and live with the consequences. Similarly, they can choose their particular lifestyle including such things as how to live, whether to live alone or with others and who to live with. (more...)

Nuclear Power

There is a longstanding perception that nuclear power plants are expensive and dangerous with the potential for accidents and leaks outweighing the potential benefits they could provide. There are also concerns about what to do with nuclear waste products such as spent fuel rods.

Whether or not these concerns were once valid, they are certainly not valid now. Advances in the design of nuclear power plants mean that they are now safe and produce quite small quantities of waste. Moreover, waste can now be safely stored indefinitely. (more...)

Property Rights

The LDP believes that people have the right to own and control private property and that the only legitimate way to deal with each other is through voluntary exchange. It believes that maintaining the safety and security of the Australian people and their property must be the government’s first priority.

The LDP supports a shift in security resources away from victimless crimes (seatbelts, bicycle helmets, drugs) and towards preventing physical and property crimes such as assault, rape and theft. (more...)

School Education

The LDP opposes the state-federal jurisdictional duplication in education policy and believes that school funding and regulation should be decentralised and devolved to the state level.

At the state level the LDP supports the introduction of school vouchers to allow greater competition between schools and greater parental choice. (more...)

Smoking

It is everyone's right to control the property they own, and everyone's right to determine the standards of behaviour on their own property.

Just as a private individual has the right to dictate whether visitors or guests may smoke in their lounge-room or their car, so too the owner of a bar or restaurant should have the right to determine whether smoking should or should not be permitted on their premises. (more...)

Taxation

The LDP believes we need significant cuts in income tax. It supports the 30/30 tax system where nobody pays income tax on their first $30,000 and there is a flat 30% income tax on income above $30,000. The LDP would also bring all taxes into line so that the same tax applied on all income - whether wages, capital gain, company profits or fringe benefits. (more...)

Traffic Laws

The LDP believes traffic laws should strike a better balance between safety and the need for efficient travel over long distances. The balance is currently determined by public servants, whereas it should be a matter for the community. (more...)

Victimless Crimes

The LDP does not generally support the criminalisation of victimless crimes. Wherever possible it will seek to reduce the intrusion of government into these areas. (more...)

Welfare

Economic growth has led to all Australians (including the poor) getting richer and more money going to charity. Consequently there is less and less need for our large and expensive welfare system. The LDP supports the replacement of all current welfare programs with a comprehensive negative income tax that provides a basic standard of living and some assistance to the working poor. (more...)

Voluntary Euthanasia

The LDP is committed to enacting legislation to allow all adult Australians of sound mind the right to assisted suicide provided there are appropriate safety mechanisms to ensure consent is freely and rationally given.

It also supports the free speech right to provide those who may wish to end their lives the information they require to do so. (more...)

"woah.. you've got to take Rudd out of your top friends. Not only is the guy a trumpet for unionised labour market (once calling himself a "christian socialist") but the guys a conservative as well!!

Anyway - I only just discoved this party. You'll definately be getting my 2nd preference behind the Libs."

If you're suggesting a Libertarian group remove a party because of their support for someones RIGHT to join a LEGAL organisation, i would question how seriously you take liberty at all.

Also, is John Howard not a conservative, yet you voted for him? What is your position here scott? I smell a filthy capitalist.
Miss June 85; Liam!

Nov 23 2007 1:18 PM

You found a libertarian, but a libertarian socialist. There are still gulfs between us.
Anyway, thanks for the add.
You state that libertarians support maximum liberty, then go on to suggest they support smaller government; surely maximum liberty would be no government!
Not only that but you also state that you support free market capitalism, however do you not feel that wage slavery severly limits ones personal liberties, i.e. their labor value is bought and then exploited for the profits of a capitalist who is in essence practising theft.

I thought the $5 billion perpetual Higher Education Endowment Fund that was brought down in this years Federal Budget of 2007-08 is great.

It is good to see that the initial investment was from the 2006-07 Surplus!!!

It was awesome to see $843 million for raising standards of teaching and learning, and improvingliteracy and numeracy outcomes for students.

Great to see money has been set aside for the practical component of teacher training.

The $700 tutorial voucher available to help children meet literacy and numerancy benchmarks is a wise decision.

It was also great to see in the 2007-08 budget the $1,000 per year (tax exempt wage top up for Australian Apprentices under 30 in skill shortage trades for first and second years from July 1 this year - 2007.

It is great to see 21 of the 28 Technical Colleges the the Liberals/Nationals have established are operationg and open for business.

It also Great to see $84 million for three new Technical Colleges in areas in need i.e. Brisbane, Sydney and Perth areas. From this years Federal Budget of 2007-08.

Rudd’s Economic Credibility Cascades
Kevin Rudd today revealed a humiliating ignorance of tax policy.

Mr Rudd was unable to name a single tax rate or a single threshold for Australia’s income tax system:

JOURNALIST:… the Government’s tax plan, the tax policy in the Budget, can you name for me the rates and the thresholds which those rates kick in?

RUDD: Well if you look across the, you mean the ones when they…

JOURNALIST: Both of them, this year, July 1.

RUDD: Well as of July 1 if you went through the four thresholds, I think the high threshold kicks in I think at $175,000, then I think it cascades down the spectrum. When it comes to each individual tax rate and tax threshold for the future, what I have said when it comes to the future of the tax system is that our plan will be out there on the table for the Australian people to look at before the election.

For the record, here it is:

TAX SCALES FROM 1 July 2007

Taxable income ($)
Tax rate (%)

0 - 6,000
0

6,001 - 30,000
15

30,001 - 75,000
30

75,001 - 150,000
40

150,001 +
45

It is extraordinary that a man who claims to have a policy on tax does not have the slightest idea of what the system is.

Mr Rudd doesn’t understand the tax system and he doesn’t understand the Australian economy. He should never be put in charge of people’s mortgages, their businesses or their jobs.
John Howard

We've heard this small government rhetoric before many times. How are you going to implement it. Specifically which services are you going to slash? Come clean. Is the environment a priority for your free market ideology? Are you going to stand in the way of a bull dozer when there's a dollar to be made?
