I'm a guitarist / composer living in Brooklyn, NY. I was born in London, England in 1971, and was raised in New York City till I was 11 or 12, then moved to the utopian San Franciscian suburb of Mill Valley CA, where I stayed through high school. My parents were musicians and started me on guitar when I was 5 years old. I didnt get too serious about it until I was 13 or so, which was around the time I could recognize just how deep, and wide ranging my parents record collection was. Jimi Hendrix, Robert Johnson, Miles Davis, John Coltrane, Brecker Brothers, Herbie Mann, Ohio Players, Prince, Rolling Stones, Led Zepplin, Jackson 5, Beethoven, Ravi Shankar, The Police. Really all over the map. I'm thankful for that, because my own tastes started there and just went further (and further) out in each direction, more or less.
I've been back in NY since 1998, making all kinds of music. I have a few CD's out, Orthodoxy (Red Giant Records), Tactiles (Pi Recordings), and the newest, Ophiuchus Butterfly. You can find my music in the jazz bin, although I think it moves more and more frequently into other territory. I'm trying to make my own music reflect as much honesty as possible, with regards to my influences and experience.
Some of the people you might have (or can) see(n) me play with would be, Henry Threadgill, Butch Morris, Greg Osby, and Vijay Iyer. For a more detailed biography, press info and music clips - click here: my website

hi Liberty...i saw Randy V at the Mel Graves memorial concert...mentioned you and told him what you were up to ... amazing music at the concert Denny Zeitlin, Mel Martin, Bob Affifi and many others...
hi, Been getting into Tactiles especially Temporary aid, Helios, and Ultraviolet. Feel free to elaborate on your titles very quizzical they are, for me anyway. Must be some curious stories. You ARE hooking up with some cool saxophonists Oz, Shim and Threadgill!
I was lucky yesterday and stumbled on a copy of "Orthodoxy" in Little Rock. It's a great album! I can say that all three of your albums are pleasantly unique, yet there's a definite "Liberty Ellman style" in the arranging and guitar playing of all three. Looking forward to a fourth. Cheers, Michael Yoder
I saw your quartet with Brandon Ross at The Stone earlier this month. It was a great show. I especially liked the bass line in the second song you guys did.
yo Liberty - great to work and hang with you on the Public Theater gig. Have a good Holiday season. I will try to swing by the stone on the 9th before my hit be well!
