    librariansean's Interests
GeneralReading books and graphic novels, listening to music, playing guitar, walking my dog, undermining unreasonable authority. I am very interested working with young adults and helping people as a librarian. I am also very interested in making life and work fun as I don't see much purpose in making a chore out of something that should be a joy, albeit one inevitably mixed with a fair share of sorrows. BTW, since I am an adult (or at least portray one on television), of lot of my interests are pretty adult, i.e. - reading materials and audiovisual stuff that intended for mature audiences. I do enjoy quite a bit of lit and AV for young people, but a lot of the stuff I enjoy as an old dude falls far out of that territory. I like to think that by and large the stuff I enjoy has a redeeming nature to it, but sometimes the stuff designed to redeem cynical adults has to be pretty darn edgy to get through our thick hides. Even adults of a more, how shall I say, delicate type, mind find some of these books, films, etc., a little extreme, particularly in a society that is reactionary enough to give the film adaptation of "Because of Winn-Dixie" a PG rating. That said, some of the stuff below DEFINITELY deserves the R rating or equivalent it has received and should in no way be considered appropriate for all ages.
MusicVelvet Underground, Iggy Pop (& the Stooges), Bowie, the Clash, the Flaming Lips, Rain Parade, Echo & the Bunnymen, Doves, Supergrass, Super Furry Animals, the Jam, Blur, Red Tyger Church, the Warlocks, Dead Meadow, Gris Gris, Godspeed You! Black Emperor, Japancakes, Low, Television, the Who, the Kinks, the Yardbirds, the Fall, Mekons, Patti Smith, James Brown, Folk Implosion/Explosion, Smog, Lutefisk, the Feelies, the Chocolate Watchband, the Misunderstood, the Pretenders, Palace Brothers, Husker Du, Meat Puppets, Sonic Youth, the Minutemen (R.I.P. D.Boon!), Soundtrack of Our Lives, Citizen Bird/Silver Bullit, Trans Am, Tortoise, Ramones, New York Dolls, the Cramps, Gun Club, Dream Syndicate, Devo, the Chesterfield Kings, Baby Woodrose, Silver Apples, the Brian Jonestown Massacre, Damian Marley and his pappy, Sister Nancy, Crime & the City Solution, the Equals, Syd Barrett's Pink Floyd, Nick Drake, the MC5, Bauhaus & Love and Rockets, Beatles, Stones, Hendrix, Byrds, Roky Erickson/13th Floor Elevators and the list goes on....
MoviesFight Club, Trainspotting, A Clockwork Orange, The Station Agent, The City of Lost Children, Shaun of the Dead, Spirit of '76, Iron Monkey, Batman Begins, 28 Days Later, Napoleon Dynamite, I (heart) Huckabees, the Life Aquatic, Bottle Rockets, Rushmore, Tetsuo: Iron Man, House of Flying Daggers, Street Fight (animated film), the Machinist, Ghost World, My Neighbor Totoro, Girl With the Pearl Earring, Days of Heaven, Broken Flowers, Lost in Translation, the Indian Runner, the Crossing Guard, and anything with Milla Jovovich, especially if she is beating up zombies or aliens. Oh, yeah, how could I forget, Donnie Darko! Buddha have mercy, did I forget the Big Lebowski?!? And Ed Wood?!? the Nightmare Before Christmas?!? I really like movies. In fact, I should probably go watch one right now, or maybe the entire Once Upon a Time In China series back to back....
TelevisionOld: the Prisoner, Twin Peaks, the Night Stalker (starring Darren McGavin from A Christmas Story), Millennium. Current: Deadwood, Lost, Curb Your Enthusiasm, South Park, Reno 911.
BooksEverything by Chuck Palahniuk, Philip K. Dick, Thomas Pynchon, David Foster Wallace, and Irvine Welsh is absolutely essential reading for mature (i.e. - adultish) readers in my 'book'. I read a lot of graphic novels and comic books, everything from more 'sophisticated' (I think it's safe to say that this means 'adultish' as well) stuff by Dan Clowes, Chester Brown, Rob't Crumb, Roberta Gregory, & Julie Doucet to superhero comics like the Avengers and Batman. Especially mindblowing graphic novels I dig include: the Invisibles, Teenagers from Mars, Avengers Forever, Wanted, and Ed the Happy Clown. Other authors I'd recommend include William S. Burroughs, Charles Bukowski, Camille Paglia (non-fiction essays), Kurt Vonnegut, Jr., and Joseph Conrad. (If you liked the book that inspired parts of the film Apocalypse now, I'm talking about Heart of Darkness, I suggest moving on to Nostromo and The Secret Agent.) A good read for those who, like me, dig garage and psychedelic rock, is a irregularly published magazine called Ugly Things. For a more general mag that covers independent music try the Big Takeover. MOJO is a great music mag pub in great brit, right? VOYA is a groovy mag for teen librarians. Authors/reads I enjoyed recently writing for teens: believe it or not, IMNSHO, most of the Marvel and DC comics published these days are currently written and feature artwork rivaling the best high tech entertainment AND contemporary literature (and I'm talking about contemporary lit for ADULTS, mind you. YA LIT ain't got time to make no apologies (iggy and the stooges "search and destroy" reference). ditto graphic novel collections of comics such as these. Orson Scott Card writes adult science fiction and fantasy that is also appropriate for teens and really cool. All I Want Is The Truth, Elizabeth Partridge's photobio of John Lennon tells you everything you wanted to know about Lennon's entire life and enduring dreams for a better world in eloquent, moving prose. I love what you might think is sorta corny stuff like Because of Winn-Dixie and Shiloh. Lois Lowry RULES!!!! Shelley Pearsall ROCKS!!!! and Avi? oh, don't even get me started on Avi! You know you can rearrange the letters of his name to spell Via? I think that's because his books can really take you somewhere amazing. ;-) Angela Johnson. Terry Trueman. Tolkien. William Sleator. Pete Hautman. Sarah Miller. Ned Vizzini. Linda Buckley-Archer. Scott Westerfeld. M.T. ANDERSON!!!! KEVIN BROOKS!!!! Eleanor Updale. Edgar Rice Burroughs. Um, maybe you better just start by telling me what kind of book you want to read and we'll see what we can find. ;-)
HeroesThe person who scratches "wipe hands on pants" after the instructions on restroom hand dryers. Just kidding, although those hand dryers do really cheese me off. Who I really admire are brave and kind people who live up to their convictions, some examples being: teens I interviewed at Berea high school who formed a gay/straight alliance to make their school a more tolerant place, former Cuyahoga County poet laureate and civil rights activist Daniel Thompson (RIP), muckraker extraordinaire and speaker of truth to power Roldo Bartimole, Cindy Sheehan, and, hopefully, YOU dear reader!

   librariansean's Blurbs
About me:
I am a librarian serving teens in Northeast Ohio. The purpose of this page is to let my friends and patrons know a little bit about me and stuff I'm up to.

10 Things About Me That You Probably Wouldn't Guess:
1 I sing and play guitar in an indie band with other old dudes.
2 I read almost every night and pretty much only use the tv to watch movies.
3 I am a step dad to two wonderful kids.(Although they would probably disagree about the kid part since they are 13 and 12.)
4 I received a National Merit Scholarship that helped me attend the University of Chicago as an undergrad.
5 Even though I didn't officially become a librarian until in my 30's, I worked in libraries both in high school and college.
6 I've been published as a writer, but nothing cool like a novel or comic book.
7 I've visited Mexico, England, the Netherlands, and Germany.
8 I've been lucky enough to see a lot of bands play live including David Bowie, Blondie, the Ramones, the Pretenders, the Flaming Lips, Dinosaur Jr., the Grateful Dead, Husker Du, the Violent Femmes, Jane's Addiction, the Brian Jonestown Massacre, the Butthole Surfers, Echo & the Bunnymen, the Mekons and Rain Parade.
9 The older I get, the less I like rollercoasters.
10 I did a couple of performance art pieces in my radicalized 20's.
bonus: Eric Clapton, Jeff Beck and Jimmy Page did their best work with the Yardbirds. OK, that has nothing to do with me, but it is TRUE! Here's three more things really about me just so y'all don't feel cheated:
I've spent way over ten grand on music cds in my life; that might not be so surprising, but what is is that I still have a lot of holes in my collection.
My General Tso's Chicken, Chicken Paprikash and Vegetarian Chili are to die for.
My biggest hero or influence in my life is not some musician or author, but my mother.
WAFFLE FREE ZONE
Who I'd like to meet:
David Bowie, Iggy Pop, Maureen Tucker, Patti Smith, Chuck Palahniuk, and, if dead people count (I like to think they do), Philip K. Dick, William S. Burroughs and Bill Hicks. If we include the undead, the man with the atom brain who never had a bloody hammer, Roky Erickson! How 'bout some romantic and talented couples like Debbie Harry/Chris Stein? I'd like to interview Ray Davies, Chrissie Hynde, and Jim Kerr simultaneously and speak solely about their contributions to music. I've got like a half hour of questions based on a Kinks/Pretenders comparison on the song "Stop Your Sobbing" alone. (The Pretenders covered the Kinks "Stop Your Sobbing" on their first or second record. I know, I'm a librarian and I should look it up, but I'm doing this from home and my modem averages in a range between 14.4-28.8k. But I digress....)
I believe young adults and 'tweens' deserve every bit as much respect and opportunity to benefit from what libraries have to offer as little kids and adults. I would enjoy meeting other professionals who share this philosophy and want to become allies in the effort to make libraries teen friendly and safe!

Welcome Aboard and hope you enjoy the rock and roll ride and read in The Roadhead Blog...

Fifties & Sixties Pop Culture!
Classic Cars, Rock n' Roll, Elvis, Route 66, Drive in Movies, Route 66, Roadside Culture, Kerouac & The Beats, Haight Ashbury, Easy Rider & Vietnam

Pop Culture guru Mike Marino looks at the '60s and beyond through his own kaleidoscope, where rock met revolution. Spewing quips like a psychedelic lawn mower run amok, he drags us, more than likely kicking and screaming, through a past few of us knew and even fewer would admit. This is Truth barred from the history books--- or as Marino would put it, the Red, White and Screwed. Could cause nausea, night sweats and loss of appetite. Void where prohibited.

BBQH BABY BOOMERS HEADQUARTERS MAGAZINE

This is the epitome of a boomer roadie book for the boomer roadie. It's funny, it's nostalgic, it's interesting. Route 66, fins, fuzzy dice, carhops. It's all there. This would be a great gift for the roadhead in your life.
