"LIES UNKNOWN" described from the perspective of "Detroit Rock Review"
We at DR2 have been blindsided by Lies Unknowns self-titled, 14-track, debut disc! These young guys, and gal, came out of nowhere to make it into the finals of the 89X I'm With The Band $10,000 Contest. We had heard no buzz about the band at all and now we, as well as many others, can’t stop talking about them. This disc is packed with songs that range from straight-ahead, pop-punk, emo-teen-angst, to more thoughtful and diverse, classic rock-inspired cuts. I think what is most impressive is the distinctive style that Lies Unknown has created. In a genre of sound-the-same bands, Justin Alexander’s distinctive vocal style, accented by arrangements that change time and tone dramatically, creates a sound that is instantly familiar, yet new and fresh. The first track, “Left In The Dark”, gives you a feel for what Lies Unknown offers with it’s sophisticated rhythm’s, controlled delivery, and strong hook, only to segue into “Woodward Ave”, arguably, one of the best tracks on the disc (okay, full disclosure, DR2 loves any song that references Detroit in a good light!!). WW Ave. is a quirky, 50’s bebop-gone-emo tune that will have you smiling, singing along, and thinking of your own crazy nights on Detroit’s historic boulevard. Also featured in this collection are the pop-punk gems Man In Control”, “Go-Go You Know” and, one of our favorites, “Nowhere Fast”. Each has that irresistible beat and “simplified” lyric that gets the crowd “jumpin” in the clubs!! The Tongue-in-cheek, “She’s A Slut”, a song about that girl we have all run into at some point in our lives, sounds, musically, like a Chuck Berry revival (until you listen to the lyric). Unlike most discs, we think the band saved the best for last in this collection. The 13th and 14th tracks (an incredible number for their first effort!) are very insightful, creative, and show a talent for song writing that is not limited by the formulaic boundaries of genre. We think these two tracks are truly unique and, frankly, defy our abilities to adequately describe; you’ve got to hear them. DR2 is serving Detroit notice, watch out for Lies Unknown! This young group (Justin is only 19, Jamie is a year younger!) is poised and ready to go to the next level. Don’t miss them. Get out to a club and catch a show, while you have the chance!! You can get your own copy of Lies Unknown’s new disc at a variety of sources; iTunes, Napster, Lala.com, Rhapsody, Shockhouse, E-music.com, Music.com… or you could do it the DR2 way and get out to a show and buy one!!! As always you can find them in DR2’s Top Friends and you can watch a recently taped video at www.detroitrockreview.com on the Video Gallery page. Remember, Detroit Rock Review is the only place to find local music news and reviews. Keep Rockin’!
LIES UNKNOWN in the Metro Times

"We here at MT central believe that Lies Unknown, in all of its tousled, tatty elegance, could be the best new rock 'n' roll band in the Motor City. There, said it. What's great is the band doesn't see it that way — so let 'em stay forever young."

Ricky Rat talks LIES UNKNOWN in the Metro Times
MT: "Have you seen any particularly inspiring bands in Detroit lately?"
Rat: "The other band playing our reunion show, besides Bootsey X & the Love Masters, is a young local band. They're called Lies Unknown — and you talk about being outside of the scene! I don't think they've barely ever played at the Magic Stick or the Lager House. They play oddball places like the Hayloft and the New Ritz — they're like in their own scene. And because they're young, they're mainly doing all-ages things. They're a four-piece and the main singer-guitar player is this kid named Justin Alexander, who, in my opinion, is one of the most talented kids I've ever seen. He's 20 now — he might be the oldest in the band — but when I first saw him, he was 17 and I just couldn't believe how good he could play."
"I gotta be honest and say I grew partial right away because the kid found me on MySpace a few years ago and when I looked at his page, he was all into Teenage Head, the Dead Boys, the Trash Brats — this kid's 17 and yet he knows this stuff, you know? At the time, he had a punk band called the White Lies and he told me, "You have to come out and see us. We're playing this [college] hall party and we're covering a Trash Brats song." So me and my girlfriend go to this hall party, we're the oldest people there — and these 17-year old-kids come out and they did two covers: "Pirate Love" by [Johnny Thunders'] Heartbreakers and a Trash Brats song, "Hungry Eyeballs." It was nuts!"
"They're so polished already — to some people they might be too polished or too professional. But I like stuff like that, harmonies and just boom! It's all there. These kids are that good already. All the Brats stuff aside — them being fans and all — I'm really impressed with them. And they just keep getting better every time I see them."
