Life Underwater is a four-piece band based out of Los Angeles, California. Formed in 2006 from the remnants of previously established LA bands, Life Underwater has forged its own identity in the saturated music scene of LA-Silverlake with well-received shows at The Echo, Silverlake Lounge, Club Violaine, the Relax Bar, and others.
At first, the influences of noisy pop bands like Stereolab and the Breeders are evident. With a closer listen, it’s clear there’s something much deeper going on. Drawing comparisons from Feist to Karen O, vocalist/keyboardist Laura Derby, who performed at Coachella 2002 with the electronic band Cirrus, demonstrates the rare ability to combine a dynamic and forceful vocal presence with the thoughtful use of melody and lyrics often missing from today’s female-fronted rock bands. Rodney and Matt, who share guitar and bass duties, were well-known fixtures in the Los Angeles dreampop/shoegaze scene with their bands the Von Trapps and Projekt Records band Melodyguild. In Life Underwater, Rodney and Matt maintain a clear rhythmic pulse while capturing the distorted, melodic attributes of shoegaze bands like Ride and Pale Saints. Anna McEntee’s garage-rock drumming style is marked by powerful bass and snare heavy rhythms pushing Life Underwater’s music across the full sonic spectrum.
Life Underwater is currently playing live throughout southern California while writing and recording their first EP.
