About me: Councilmember Marko Liias is a lifetime resident of the Pacific Northwest, and was born in Edmonds, Washington in 1981. A product of Mukilteo schools, Marko graduated from Kamiak High School in 1999. While at Kamiak, Marko was a participant in the debate program, and attended and was successful at several national competitions. He also served as a student member of the Mukilteo School Board, representing his fellow students and participating in the policy-making process.
Marko went on to attend Georgetown University in Washington, DC. While at Georgetown, he studied U.S. foreign policy and learned about the unique role the United States occupies in world affairs. Marko studied under noted scholars in international affairs, including former Secretary of State Madeleine Albright. He graduated from Georgetown in the spring of 2003, earning a Bachelor's degree in International Politics. After graduation, Marko returned home to the Mukilteo area, and completed graduate work in public affairs at the University of Washington.
Also in 2003, Marko co-founded a new business, together with his parents, to build homes and duplexes in the South Snohomish County area. Regal Homes has since grown into a multi-million dollar enterprise, building homes of quality. Regal Homes is a pioneer in the green building industry, and actively participates in the "Built Green" program to voluntarily meet higher environmental standards.
In addition, Marko has become very active in his local community, volunteering with various civic organizations and in local schools. He has returned to his alma mater, Kamiak, to assist the debate program in which he once participated.
Marko Liias was elected to the Mukilteo City Council in November 2005, and is serving his first term. His policy priorities are transportation, local economic development, and the preservation of parks and open space. He also serves on several national and regional boards and commissions including, the Energy, Environment & Natural Resources Policy Committee for the National League of Cities, the Puget Sound Regional Council Executive Board, Snohomish County Tomorrow, and Community Transit. He also sits on the Council's Public Safety and Paine Field Airport Committees.
