Sounds Like
The noise pop of The Jesus and Mary Chain and the synth-pop of Depeche Mode with the heart-felt lyrics of Bobby Wratten plus the stage presence of and ageless Morrissey. Add in the amateur low-fi efforts of every decent demo and the warm glow of vinyl as the needle throbs up and down on the slightly warped record you played at age 13.
My side-projects: The Quaking Aspens (indie pop), HaloDefect (electronic dance), Apartment Search (insert genre).
After some time as a pause-button bedroom DJ creating cassette mix tapes for anyone who would accept them, I was hooked. In the 80's, I lived far from any decent radio station, but we had cable early on. MTV inspired me to mix by cutting and taping cassettes together to create my own remixes of The Cure, JAMC, Ministry, Depeche Mode, The Pet Shop Boys, Love and Rockets, Peter Murphy, and countless other post-punk and alternative acts. I bought 45 RPM records for $3 at Gemco (Madness, Berlin, Men Without Hats, Zappa, Billy Idol, The Cure, The Cars, Go Gos, awful music, et al). We had an eight track player in our bedroom. I remember the loud "click" sound it would make. I listened to a lot of 50's and 60's music on that 8-track. I think my dad had one of the first CD players. When he bought it, there were only 7 CDs on the market. As technology became more affordable and accessible, I re-doubled my remixing efforts. I composed several loop-based tracks in 1993 through 1997. Soon, I began creating entire hour-long mix tapes on CD. After much encouragement from my club-kid brother, I ventured out into real clubs and played my first sets as a live vinyl and CD DJ. I focused on the booming Trip-hop sound of the 1990s and threw in some of my guilty pleasures and beloved synthpop to mix things up (thank you, A Different Drum label). With the advent of high-speed internet connections, I have moved on-line and I continue to create mixes in a podcast format. Clubs and bars have hosted me from 1999-present...then I "retired" from live gigs on December 16, 2006. Sometimes and oath can mean nothing and people abandon you, so I continue on, dumbstruck and broken-hearted. Inspired by Infant Sorrow, I tell my story in the music I play.
