STUDY GUIDE 2006/2007 ART SCHOOL ARNHEM
Recently the name of Art school Arnhem was changed into ArtEZ. Most students didn’t had any sympathy for the new name in spite of the direction. This concept reacts on that situation by changing ArtEZ into a name of a hard rock/metal band. The fictive groupies of the band ArtEZ are portraited in this publication. The rocking groupies are photographed at concerts and parties wearing T-shirts of the band. The cover contains concert tickets of the band. This book was the winner of a competition to design the new guide for Art School Arnhem, and this, the winning design, got realized.

This is a book about Ton, a man who has a big jeans fetish. The whole story is fictive. The starting point of this story was a small article in a newspaper about a guy who was caught by stealing a women jeans in a swimming pool. When the police checked his house they discovered more then five hundred stolen women jeans.

Geert Wilders' New Ideology - 2010

We came to a point where it was time to react on populist politics using our
own tools. We are making a statement on Wilders’ politics by narrowing the gap
between ‘us’ and ‘them’. Without demonizing him, we use Geert Wilders
as a stooge in order to tell a constructive message with a larger importance.

This bed linen is reflecting on current global issues. It's an update from the Bed-In
for Peace from John Lennon en Joko Ono in 1968. Twenty rooms in the Lloyd Hotel
have Viola Renate's bed linen. Hotel guests are sleeping under the messages.

SOFT LADDER, HAMMER SAW AND BUCKET REPRODUCTION
Above you can see the process of making a paper ladder from 40 meters long. Starting with a roll
of paper, ending with a ladder on the front of an office block in the financial district of Amsterdam.
The ladder is an interpetation of Claes Oldenburg's Soft Ladder, Hammer, Saw and Bucket.
Claes Oldenburg makes us questioning the nature of the everyday. He wants his art to reflect
contemporary, everyday life in all its complexity and change. Viola Renate is emphasising
the strength of everyday objects by suspending a paper ladder, hammer, saw and bucket
from the walls of large office blocks.

RESPONSE TO CINDY SHERMAN
March - May 2009 Six lightboxes are hanging in the central passageway at the Central Station of Amsterdam.
They represent the Untitled Film Stills from Cindy Sherman for the Stedelijk Museum during their nomadic
period. That many people admire the work of of Cindy Sherman appears from the amount of imitations
of her serie Untitled Film Stills, which Viola Renate found on social network sites like Flickr and MySpace.
Over the whole world, young women are photographing thereselves in typical Cindy Sherman settings.
The design of the lightboxes are refering to analougue contactsheets and digital image search engines.
Important are the captions of the imitations, with descriptions of all the (amateur) photographers.
