Who I'd like to meet: “Black Oak Arkansas”.............................................................................................................
In the year 1963, some high school pals decided to get together to form a group because of their love of music.
After 43 years, several dozen albums ... three of which became gold, one of which became platinum, and one song known as "Jim Dandy To The Rescue, " which became a Gold single ... and which they were told to record by none other than Elvis Presley himself. .. and by Elvis' life-long friend, who was also a major member of the BOAfami/y ... Memphis DJ
George Klein, (Elvis got tired of wailin' for a band with Jim Dandy as their lead singer to do a tune with his name in it!) .... this group of friends still manages to not only stay together, but to thrive! (After talking to Elvis, Black Oak Arkansas was told the following week by their producer Tom Dowd and by Warner Bros./ElectroiAtlanlic Chairman Of The Board Ahmet Ertegun that these two industry giants were also about to ask BOA about recording that same tune! Ahmet himself only personally signed 5 groups to recording contracts in his long, long recording history ... and Black Oak Arkansas had the honor of being number 5!)
Many testimonials and awards hll~~ been presented to this 'band by everyone from Bill Gr~ham, (who founded and ran Winterland. Ballroom and both the Fillmore East and West), to Wolfman Jack from the Midnight Special; from First Lady Betty Ford on behalf of The American Cancer Society ... to President Bill Clinton!
(He inhaled.)
With an original homespun musical flavor, Black Oak Arkansas has been presenting their music and their life to the worlds' public now for almost half of a century, and with a still active touring and recording schedule ... there is presently no end in sight! June of2007 found them performing at the Sweden Rock Festival along with Aerosmith, Scorpions, Motorhead, REO Speedwagon and many more! You can also find them this year in the studio working on their newest .release entitled
"Memphis Mean Tymes," and continuing to book concerts through the 2007-2008 touring season.
Jim "Dandy" Mangrum, the blond dynamo of the center stage, has been the lead singer and front man for BOA since their conception in junior high school with guitarist Rickie Lee Reynolds. Jim has been heard to say
that one of his proudest moments was when Johnnie Carson asked Mick Jagger on the Tonight Show that of all of the new and up-coming
groups ... "Who was hisfavorite Front man?" Mick quickly said, "Jim Dandy of Black Oak Arkansas!' On their first U.S. tour, Bad Company was a special guest on a tour of the headlining BOA boys, and lead singer Paul Rodgers was known to have given the same response.
Once at a Humanitarian Dinner in New York honoring Ahmet Ertegun, none other than Mr. John Lennon came over to personally meet Jim Dandy ... he put his hand on Jims' shoulder .•. and told Jim that he thought Jim was "ahead of his time!"
Jim has been said to be the role~model for famous singers in bands such as Guns and Roses, Van Halen, Motley Crewe and many more. In 2004, Jim was elected by Classic Rock magazine as being number #36 in the top 100 front men of all time! His live-show antics and verbal fire snatching on stage, along with his unusual vocal style and instrument of choice, the scruboard, have made him into the Rock and Roll legend that he is today.
Along with Jim Dandy, BOA these days consists of Rickie Lee Reynolds on vocals, songwriting and guitar, (lifetime pal and original founding member of Black Oak Arkansas), Johnnie Bolin on drums .•. an incredible drummer with the longest BOA stage-life in history ... (and whose brother was Tommy Bolin, legendary guitarist with three great albums of his own ... and also of James Gangfame when he replaced Joe Walsh and Deep Purple fame when he replaced Richie Blackmore before Tommy’s tragic death in 1976), George Hughes on bass, (Long-time
friend of the Black Oak Arkansas Wild Bunch ... recruited from a band called Judge Parker, another part of the BOA family, both being from Ft. Smith, Arkansas), and last. .. though surely not least, Mr. Hal McCormack on the slamnin' lead guitar, (another long-time friend of BOA and guitarist for such bands as Survivor and Tora Tora).
Black Oak Arkansas' live show has been described as, " They come gallivanting out onto the stage like a bunch of escaped lunatics from a Dogpatch Insane Asylum!" Though many albums have been put out over the years on this bunch of guys, they were always known best for their live shows. On Jim's 25th Birthday, Bill Graham presented them with an award for playing 320 one-niters in one year! (That night, BOA legend has it that the BOA road crew wanted to get Jim Dandy 25 girls so that he could "run the line!" Jim said, "It's harder for a man to keep it up that long than it would be for a woman to open it up 25 times, regardless iifright or wrong!" But luckily, the road crew only found 161) Wolfman Jack called them the hardest working band in Rock and Roll history!
In their long musical history, the BOA boys have shared a stage with the likes of James Gang, Kiss, The Who, The Rolling Stones, Bob Seegar, King Crimson, Emerson, Lake and Palmer, Black Sabbath, Foghat, Bad Company, Bruce Springstein, Boston, Iron Butterfly, Grand Funk Railroad, B.B. King, -Ted Nugent, Alice Cooper, The Outlaws, Deep Purple, 38 Special, Marshall Tucker, Buddy Miles, Billy Preston, Jerry Lee Lewis, BTO, Robin Trower, Humble Pie, Earth, Wind and Fire, The Eagles, Blackfoot, Credence Clearwater, Johnnie Winter, Edgar Winter, Rick Derringer, Stepphenwolf, Allman Bros., The Doobie Brothers, Z Z Top, Chuck Berry, Lynard Skynard, Charlie Daniels, James Brown, Steely Dan, J. Geils Band, Cheech and Chong, Steve Martin, Danny Thomas, Evil Kenevil, and the list goes on and on and on! Warner Bros. has released a D VD on the early years of the band, and this Christmas there are plans for a release of a Black Oak Arkansas DVD live at Royal Albert Hall in London. BOA has donated hundreds of thousands of dollars to charities in their career, received the first ever "Humanitarian Award" at the Grammy Awards on T. and the governor of the State of Arkansas even declared a "Black Oak Arkansas Day" on October 6th. There is now a permanent display in the Arkansas State Museum in Little Rock dedicated to the band.
2007 is also supposed to find Jim Dandy taking his shining personality to the Silver Screen of Hollywood! Along with fellow Arkansas pal Billy Bob Thornton ... and the incredible Mr. Robert Duvall, Jim has been given a script to an upcoming movie titled "Life Sentence" in which Jim will be playing a mad-dog killer and given a "life sentence" in prison! Shooting is scheduled to begin in the fall.
Fans of BOA who come to know the band find themselves becoming more like family. Black Oak Arkansas has always been a band for the people ... tryin' to express the feelings of the people they are and the people they meet. This is one of the things that has given them their long lifespan ... and the people are the ones who have given it to them.
After having recorded with Atlantic/Atco Records, MCA Records, Capricorn Records, Rhino Records, (who has just released a 2-CD collection of BOA called "The Definitive Rock of Black Oak Arkansas!'') ... along with having six more "best of” CDs on Capitol Records, Warner Brothers Records, and many more ... and having no less than 14 compilation CDs with everyone from famous Southern Rockers to Dale Earnhart himself. After having toured every major city and every secondary circuit in the Americas, along with several tours of Europe and South America, Black Oak Arkansas has hit the road once again.

MICHELLE MALONE BIO..............
Michelle Malone doesn’t consider herself a pioneer. But she became an independent artist long before it became hip to be indy.
Clive Davis was going to make her a star when he personally signed her to Arista Records in 1990. It’s easy to see what seduced the ear of the legendary label president: Michelle was the tough, good-looking chick with a sultry voice baptized in the church.
There was just one hitch: she refused to play the game. When Arista tried to dictate her music, she defiantly walked away. But there was a method to the madness. Michelle returned to her own record label and hit the road, selling her albums out of her car trunk. She not only survived, she managed to thrive.
Michelle’s independence gave her a luxury that major label acts no longer have — the opportunity to grow and evolve as an artist without having to worry about commercial expectations — and she took full advantage.
She started out as a folk troubadour. She evolved into a rocker, fronting Drag The River and Band de Soleil. After that, she explored folk rock, power pop, and blues-based Americana. Along the way, Michelle developed into a world-class slide guitarist. She also became known as “Moanin’” Michelle Malone because when Albert King anoints you with a nickname, it’s something you embrace.
Debris — Michelle’s 10th studio album — represents another significant step forward as it brings all her influences together. Produced by Nick Di Dia (Bruce Springsteen, Pearl Jam, Train and Sass Jordan) and featuring Peter Stroud (lead guitarist for Sheryl Crow), Debris is poised to be Michelle’s breakout.
She’s already coming off the two best records of her career — Stomping Ground and Sugarfoot — which turned the national critics into fans. The New York Times says she is “the kind of singer and songwriter who can jolt things into overdrive.” Rolling Stone calls her music “raucous and jubilant.” Billboard magazine calls her “a troubadour with grit and enough accessibility to warrant widespread acceptance.” And the Washington Post describes her as “an exceptional voice capable of smoking languor and howling catharsis."
Then there is defining plug that Dan Ackroyd gave Sugarfoot on his “House of Blues” radio show: “As raw, magnificent, dirty and lowdown as any blues you’ll ever want to hear.”
The beauty of Michelle’s voice is obvious. Her secret weapon is that she’s also a great writer who continues to grow and write meaningful songs. And Debris
contains the best and most mature songwriting of her career. “When I recorded
Sugarfoot, I was coming out of a tough period in my life,” she says. “In a way, I was hiding behind the nonchalance of those songs. I’m not hiding anything on Debris. I felt vulnerable while writing it and recording it. The songs sprang from a different place, and I realized I had to work through some personal turmoil. These songs explore changes in my life,” she says. “They’re about chaos and loss and the eventual growth that followed.”
Like most significant artists, Michelle has never made the same album twice; they all have distinct personalities and Debris is no different. The blues influence is still there, but so are her folk roots and her rock & roll pedigree.
“The delivery on this record is honest and edgy,” she says. “That’s me at my best, which was Nick’s intention. He really knows how to get great performances in the studio. We recorded most tracks live, so they feel honest and organic. It felt effortless and was the first time that I actually had fun making a record! It’s liberating to go back to my rock roots and an honor to work with someone as talented and respected in the music industry as Nick.”
The album’s highlight is the title track, Debris. It kicks off so dirty it belongs in the Rolling Stones playbook. And yet, the lyrics convey a haunting love song that looks at how our childhood can trap us as adults. “If you’re lonely, come and lay down with me,” she sings. “If you’re tired, baby, we can just go to sleep / You don’t have to stand alone in your debris.”
Then there’s the flip side: “Undertow” is as blistering a kiss-off as you’ll ever hear. “I could play that one all night,” Michelle says with a laugh. “That song is so southern – it reminds me of Lucinda Williams rocking out with Led Zeppelin.”
Its partner in crime is “Restraining Order Blues,” a tale of redneck revenge so over the top that it belongs in a Quentin Tarantino movie. “I poured Dixie Crystals into your car tank / While I was at it, I painted it pink,” she sings with enough twang to make “tank” and “pink” rhyme. “Well, I did just move to Alabama. I think it helps me see life from a slightly different point of view, “Michelle quips.
But there’s also the poignant “Feather In A Hurricane,” a song that explores how our society seems overwhelmed by events beyond our control: paying $4 a gallon to fill up a car with gasoline, 85-degree weather in February, politicians who do nothing but talk and debate while the world falls into disarray. “Don’t you feel like a feather in hurricane?” she asks, finding the perfect symbol for the times.
There is still magic in the best music, universalities that touch and move us as we listen. Michelle Malone not only understands that, she knows how to cast the spell. Listen to Debris. And prepare to be seduced.

........................................................................................................................................"THE DELTA QUEENS"...................................................... The Delta Queens consist of two girls, two guitars, and one sound. The members include Lindsey Blankenship and Whitney Callis, originally from Southeast Missouri. Lindsey currently attends school at the University of Tennessee, Martin; while Whitney attends at Arkansas State University in Jonesboro. The girls have been the best of friends all of their lives. It was after they had both graduated high school before either one had picked up a guitar. Whitney purchased her first acoustic guitar in January of 2007 and gradually taught herself different chords and different styles. Lindsey soon fell into playing the guitar as well and had received her first acoustic guitar as a gift. When hanging out together, the girls would often play music. They would learn popular songs and perform them for close friends and family. On New Year’s Eve of 2008, the girls sat up with a small guitar amp, a karaoke machine, and one microphone and performed for their first crowd at the infamous Club Cookie in Gobler, Missouri. After a successful set, the girls decided to take their new-found “hobby” to the next level; thus, The Delta Queens were born. The girls immediately began songwriting. The Delta Queens’ music is influenced by several different genres; however, their sound stays true to its country roots. They are known to perform anything from old to modern country as well as southern rock and soul (because you just can’t seem to beat Gladys and Aretha). The DQs are currently in the process of recording their original songs. Be sure to keep an eye out because this duo is hotter than a two dollar pistol!
