Singing harmonies and playing music was part of the family routine in Linda's early years. At five years old in Maidenhead, England, the kids -- two sisters and brother -- were strumming mom's autoharp, singing English Christmas carols, making recordings to send to the United States. Back in the States, Linda studied piano for a decade and violin for half of that. In 1993 while completing an internship near Ohio University in the Appalachian Mountain foothills, she discovered and fell in love with the mountain dulcimer and American roots music, including old-time, bluegrass and celtic.
-----------------------------------------------------------------------------------------
At a 1995 bluegrass festival in Nashville, Tenn, Linda met accomplished dulcimer player and founder of Nashville's Grand Old Dulcimer Club, Sandy Conatser. The duo began a nine-year gig playing for heart transplant and oncology patients at Vanderbilt University Medical Center. In 1996, they created an instrumental recording of duets called "Heart Strings."
-----------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------Sandy introduced Linda to dulcimer legend and virtuoso David Schnaufer, with whom Linda studied for 11 years through the Blair School of Music. In 1997, David brought together four of his top students to form the Nashville Dulcimer Quartet, a dulcimer ensemble experiment that grew into a nationally acclaimed performing group. As part of the NDQ, Linda developed a repertoire of classic tunes including David's favorite "antique" country favorites, spun into 4-part instrumental arrangements. The NDQ recorded a CD in 2002, produced by David Schnaufer, and began touring and performing at festivals and on stages across the country. Performances included Nashville Public Radio's "Live in Studio C" program, "Woodsongs Old-Time Radio Hour" at the Kentucky Theater, the Blair School of Music's Ingram Hall, and many other venues. The CD, "Four-Part Inventions," received praise from music critics and the dulcimer community and in 2005, Nashville producer Candace Corrigan featured David Schnaufer and the Nashville Dulcimer Quartet in a video documentary entitled, "The Nashville Nobody Knows" (www.NashvilleNobodyKnows.com).
-----------------------------------------------------------------------------------------
Just before the untimely death of David Schnaufer in 2006, Linda met up with guitar and banjo player, Christopher Cheatham, and together they formed an old-time string band called the "Corn Pone Stars" which includes a cast of Nashville-based musicians. The band brought Linda's voice and ability to create harmonies to the stage. Audiences experience the raw, primitive energy of an old-time music jam, the intrigue of Appalachian history and American roots music, and the charm of ballads made famous on early Grand Ole' Opry stages. Linda's pure vocals and warm stage presence welcome those who are strangers to old mountain music, connecting strangers and friends to the magic of the mountain dulcimer. She brings haunting Irish aires, driving fiddle tunes and classic country hits out of this simple instrument.-----------------------------------------------------------------------------------------
With the fresh talent and musical ingenuity of Christopher Cheatham and fiddler Drew Fedak -- who are both deeply rooted in the music and history of the Kentucky and Tennessee hills, Linda recorded her first solo album, "The Lillies So Fair" -- a reference to Wildwood Flower lyrics and David Schnaufer's favorite, the stargazer lilly. The album is packed full of charm, featuring eleven classic songs, including two instrumental tunes. Sweet vocals and harmonies interspersed with jamming old-time tunes make this recording unique and fun. The result is a homespun treasure trove of Nashville classics. ----Frieda Jack, Fair Lilies Music
