Linda Stout writes songs, sings, plays guitar and baritone ukulele. She has been playing for more than a year in a duo with London McDaniel, who does (warm, sweet) backing vocals, guitars, vocals, dobro, bass or banjo. Hear them on an early rehearsal of "Trying Not to Tell You," track 4.
On Linda's newest CD, "Extended Play," Linda played guitar and baritone uke, producer David Sale played multiple instruments, and Bobby Bringi played his mridangam (a kind of ancient Indian drum). Linda has also had a duo with Matt Robbins ..boards and backing vocals. Some of Linda's other collaborators have included her cousin, Ward Stout on mandolin and fiddle (virtually on "Blue Blue Water" and as kids), Charlie Shew on bass and drums, Greg Emerson on drums, Jan Nigro on piano, Dana Paul on upright bass, Joseph Prusch on fiddle, bass and viola, Christopher Loxley ..o and Dawn Hoff on vocals.
Influences
If not direct influences (which are hard to pin down), then familiarity with the Gershwins, Cole Porter, Charlie Parker, musical theater repertoire and jazz standards, Stephen Foster, James Taylor, Karen Carpenter, Sarah Vaughn, Laura Nyro, Dave Brubeck, Bacharach, never leaving the dance floor all night in clubs, Asleep at the Wheel, Rickie Lee Jones, Allison Krauss, her dad, who always told her to listen to bass lines, her producer David K. Sale and duo partner London McDaniel.
Sounds Like
Been told Rickie Lee Jones, "in the ballpark of Norah Jones with a guitar," and "Norah Jones meets Ryan Adams," and on her first more acoustic CD and at solo shows Joan Baez and "a female Kenny Rankin. Also Everything But the Girl (Tracy Thorne), Dido, Astrud Gilberto, Natalie Merchant and Madeleine Pereaux. More recently: Some comparisons to Lisa and Wendy, who collaborated with Prince, Steely Dan and even Yes.
Recently Linda Stout worked with producer David Sale/Camus, creating tail-wagging uptempo downtempo, a little exhuberant antifolk, an uptown downhome vibe through an Appalachian pop song that Linda "co-wrote" with the esteemed poet Robert Frost ("The Pasture") and other lyric co-writes with David Sale/Camus (see in top friends below). Hear "The Pasture" and "A Good Song" here. The same producer, David Sale, has been gaining rave reviews from the national music press and radio for producing "Dirty Little Secret" with Squirrel Nut Zipper singer Katharine Whalen, a wildly creative percussively hypercaffeinated pop cabaret that David Dye of NPR's World Cafe called "dazzling and seductive."
Linda Stout's debut CD, "Good Luck Child" (2004), an eclectic acoustic collection of pop and jazz songs she wrote and produced, earned her Best Solo CD and Best Female Singer praise from The Ithaca Journal, many other glowing reviews and was listed as an acoustic "fave" at Radioio.com.
Linda Stout's unique voice ranges from dusky to sweet, and she plays guitar, incorporating finger-picking, jazz voicings and Latin rhythms, and adores her an elderly mahogany Harmony baritone ukulele for its rootsy, warm sound. Down below, in her top friends, check out Matt Robbins, her duo partner who played on the debut CD, and cousin Ward Stout, who co-produced the track, "Blue Blue Water," contributing fiddle and mandolin on her debut. He's currently producing a project for Aaron Tippin. And check out her producer David Sale/Camus.
