Interests

  • General

history, modern art, vintage jewelry and purses, travel and travel writing, food and food writing, roses(the ones that smell good), gardenias, umbrellas, backyard picnics, grammar (yes, i know ALL about it, commas and apostrophes and even lie and lay), fiction (science fiction and historical fiction), riesling wine, strawberry daiquiris, bookstores (local ones in particular, used ones, for sure), foreign places (rome, athens, paris), universities (i liked the looks of the university of georgia and berkeley, of course, and LSU was appealing, warren wilson was lovely), dollar bills and quarters (well, i wouldn't spurn a hundred-dollar bill, either), flipflops, cheap rugs (very colorful), vintage shoes and clothing, a good baked potato, smart critters, rocks (like diamonds), family photos.
  • Music

i was weaned on music because my mother was a pianist and played all kinds every day, from beethoven to rag. and she taught me to sing and signed me up for talent contests, where i sang songs from oklahoma and gigi. so, gershwin and cole porter and rodgers and hammerstein, anything from musicals to lucinda williams and gospel to the beatles and the bangles. quirky lyrics and minor keys. bonnie raitt. eva cassidy. diana krall. blind boys from alabama. iron butterfly. simon and garfunkel. the doors. the pretenders. tom petty and the heartbreakers. every time i hear "old man river" sung by paul robson, or anybody else for that matter, i cry my heart out. and for "bridge over troubled waters" too. classic rock. chopin. and the late, great patsy cline, my favorite. ..
  • Movies

a great eclectic array of them: dr. strangelove, the searchers, 12 angry men, the grapes of wrath, citizen kane, the black stallion, mementoes, walkabout, children of men, the graduate, american beauty, papillon, laurence of arabia, midnight cowboy, days of heaven, camille, queen christina, the thin man, american graffiti, the third man, charlie chaplin in modern times, bringing up baby, apocalypse now, full metal jacket, taxi driver, tender mercies, miranda july, blue angel, german expressionism, anything de niro, duvall, streep, deer hunter, pulp fiction and the twist dance scene, a streetcar named desire, pan's labyrinth, treasure of the sierra madre, badlands, godfather, the philadelphia story with cary grant and katharine hepburn, shoah, documentaries, etc. i used to watch the afternoon movie on tv when i got home from school every day, so i got to see plenty of old black and white favorites.
  • Television

i watch the history channel and the food channel and amc and public television and news programs and animal planet.i used to watch tv a lot more than i do now. i like to watch some of the cooks/chefs, but not rachael ray; i'm sorta tired of emeril too. and iron chef is so crazy!! i like to watch old black and white movies on amc, ones with carole lombard, irene dunne, henry fonda, myrna loy, and so on. we bought a new, bigger tv and it's on more than the old one was. still, i'm not convinced exactly, although i expect i can watch sports on it and get a kick out of seeing football, basketball, gymnastics, and swimming.
  • Books

ALL of 'em!!! (i gotta come back to this section and work on it some more, so stay tuned.) histories, greek and american. biography. fiction, as in faulkner. vonnegut. hemingway. ann patchett, ali smith, joan didion, marilynne robinson, mona simpson, barbara kingsolver, annie proulx, don delillo. science fiction, as in connie willis, nancy kress, octavia butler, ursula le guin, nancy willard, catherine asaro, linda nagata, nicola griffith, mary doria russell. science, natalie angier and richard dawkins. short story collections like nathan englander's. everything!!! i like to read about travel, of the sort pico iyer writes.
  • Heroes

all my relatives who lived thru WWI and the depression and WWII, especially my great-grandmother who was widowed and remarried and raised a second family and still managed to give all us grandkids silver dollars to hoard. people who don't need to run with the herd, who can stand for a principle without caving. TEACHERS, who give so much of themselves to kids who rarely know that. NURSES, who do so much of the work and nurture so many people. THINKERS, young and old, who work to solve problems. my husband. my daughter. mainly, the rank and file who try to live every day and think once in a while about someone else other than themselves, who smile at everyone, say a kind word, smooth a worn brow.

well. there's four in our household: me and my husband and daughter and our doggie topsi. i'm a baby boomer extraordinaire. i am an editor now but was an english teacher for many years. i have graded so many papers, u wouldn't believe it. i grew up near wrightsville beach, nc, and loved the waves but not the hurricanes. but it was a good place to grow up, semi-rural but near a town with plenty of diversions. the coast guard maintains a cutter that docks in wilmington, so we always got to see coast guard sailors walking around town. as a growing kid, i watched lots of ACC basketball and football games and cried pitiably when my teams lost. it's the ACC way. i went to ECU and NCSU and got degrees in english and history and secondary education. i taught at both places, longer at NCSU though. i'm native north carolinian of the 9th generation or so. i'm part french, mais oui, the best part!! i'm liberal, proud of it, and intend to remain so. i like moon pies and cheerwine and yahoos and macaroons. i have one sister who is 2 years younger than me; she got married at age 19; i got married at age 27. so she's already a grandmother; i'm not. i know very little about how to develop a great myspace page, but i'm still trying! bear with me, please.

Who I'd like to meet:

i don't have anyone special in mind. except for the dalai lama, i would like to meet him. i like to meet people who have different backgrounds and talents from my own. i like to see different perspectives on life. just people!!! artists, writers, doctors, patients, oh, i don't care, everyone! just real folk with stories to tell. people who like chocolate ice cream and curry (but not in one dish). people who like reading, blowing bubbles, chewing bubble gum, being left-handed, watching the rain, coloring in coloring books (yes, adults can do it too!), eating my spaghetti, watching the history channel, talking about politics, making jokes, drawing doodles, scratching puppies' tummies, blowing balloons, riding ferris wheels, looking at yearbooks, eating potato salad and deviled eggs, looking at scrapbooks, sharpening pencils, using no. 1 pencils (not no. 2), buying birthday cards, sending and receiving snail mail as well as email, writing with a real fountain pen, sniffing french perfume, hating pink, sleeping under quilts in the winter, watching rain, studying biography and history, writing blogs!!
