The Story Behind The Song...
"I Can't Carry You"
I wrote this song with a friend of mine, Tiffany Burton. It was our first time writing together, and we really had no idea what we were going to write about. We started talking about past relationships, and Tiffany said something like, "I just felt like I was carrying all of his issues, and I just couldn't do it anymore." Thus, this song was born.
"Don't Cry For Me"
Probably one of the most difficult songs I've ever written. Not because I slaved over it, because of what it represents. My best friend's mother passed away unexpectedly in September of 2008. Being all the way in Tennessee, I had decided to leave for Michigan the day after I learned of her death. As I sat there, feeling incredibly sad and helpless, I suddenly had this feeling. I can't describe what kind of feeling it was. I wasn't feeling inspired, like I usually do when I write. I just grabbed my guitar, sat down, and this song literally came out in 15 minutes. And because of that, I honestly believe as though I had some help.
"Same Ole Guy"
This was another one of those quick songs that just kind of pours out of you when you've got something to say. This song came about when I was promised by another songwriter in town (who shall remain nameless) that he'd help me get started and what not when I moved here. So I contacted him, and got nothin'/nada/zip/zilch back. I was tellin' my roommate about in passing, and she said, "Aww, I'm sorry friend, that's really too bad!" ...to which I responded, "Eh, same ole guy!" This story is altered a little bit, but I did actually pass him in the bar, said hi, and he completely ignored me. All I gotta say is...KARMA.
"One and Only"
The summer between my freshman and sophomore year of college, one of my best friends told me she was getting married. I was so excited for her, and wanted to do something special, even though at the time I didn't really know what that would be. In ALL places, I was taking an Astronomy class in the summer, and I literally just wrote down the chorus there in class. After class, I booked it over to the music building, sat down at the piano, and finished this song. My friend Brian, who plays it in this recording, does an AMAZING job of making the song beautiful. Thank you, Brian!! :)
"What She Wants"
I actually wrote this on the way home from my first trip to Nashville. I had been having a HORRIBLE summer, and just wasn't writing like I usually do. My parents decided it'd be fun to take me to Nashville, and they were right. I spent the entire weekend surrounded by amazing music and by people who were doing what I wanted to. It pumped the inspiration right back into me, and as soon as I got in the car I wrote this song. That's when I realized I needed to move to Nashville.
"The Road to You"
This was the first song I ever wrote on the guitar, as you can probably tell from the simple strumming pattern! :) But this song started out to be a song about someone leaving their boyfriend/girlfriend for another person. But after I wrote the chorus, I just couldn't write anything else with that story line. So then I started re-reading it, over and over, and it kept reminding me of something, but I couldn't put my finger on it. Then I realized that if I looked at it in a different way, it was my parent's story. My mom was on a completely different road when she met my dad, and vice versa. They new that it was a long shot, but they were so in love they didn't care. I finished it just in time for their 25th Wedding Anniversary, and they're more in love now than they were back then.
Music has been a part of my life ever since I first learned all the words to Home Sweet Home at the age of two. I've been playing musical instruments and singing since I was about four years old. It was when I was a sophomore in high school that I started writing my own music, became serious about it my freshman year of college, and I haven't stopped since.
For me, writing music is the best way to express myself. I find that I can only face the reality of any situation by putting it into lyrics with a soundtrack to boot. I have to be as real as I can in any song that I write, or it's just not going to cut it for me. I've always been a big believer in, "Well, maybe if I feel this way, someone else does too." I hope that when you hear these few songs, they'll take you back.
I'd love to be the writer country artists come to when they need a song, and that's why I'm in Nashville, TN! :) I'm really interested in cowriting as much as I can; two heads ARE better than one!
These songs are just rough drafts, done just to get them down and copyright them. Hopefully you can look past the bad recording and enjoy the song!
A little about myself. I'm from a small town in Michigan, and I loved growing up there. It was amazing and I miss it everyday. I don't think I'll ever consider myself anything other than a "Michigander" but who knows, I've only been here about a year :) I live with my best friend in Brentwood, and we have a blast together, mostly because we think the other is REALLY funny! :) I have a miniature daschund named Gertie who is the love of my life and the sweetest little puppy that ever lived. I don't know what I'd do without her! My parents are my best friends; both are fun, kind, and would do anything to help the ones they love. I have two older sisters and one younger brother who I love to death and miss each and everyone of them. My friends mean the world to me, even more so now because some of them live WAY too far away! :( Other than that, I love to sing, dance (not professionally, just stupidly), read, watch movies, bonfires, rollerblading, rollercoasters, being on the lake, and just having fun!
I hope you enjoy the music, even if it's bad recording :) and please, pass this along to your friends/family if you think it's worth listening to. Thanks for stopping by! :)
