- Auto Bio of Benjamin -
As far as what I got to listen to as a kid, my parents played
a lot of Classic Rock. My favorites where Black Sabbath (I grew up listening
to Ozzy), Pink Floyd, 'Skynyrd, just to name a very few. I self discovered artists
in the Electronic genre like Erasure, Aphex Twin, Bruce Haack (though I was a
bit young and didn't realize what I was hearing until much later in life), among
other 80s pop bands. I started playing keyboards back in the 80s. I started out
real young with one of them little yellow keyboards that teach you through a
really weird sounding synthetic voice and lots of colorful buttons. It was awesome
and I still wish I had it for it would make a great circuit bent instrument.
After many musical toys my first real keyboard was a Casio of my fathers. In
fact my next real keyboard was my fathers before mine as well. My father has
been my main musical influence throughout my life both keyboards and guitar.
Anything else I learned was purely my curiosity: Digeridoo, bamboo/etc flute,
Kitchen wares, Bending... etc.
I began seriously learning guitar around 1995 using my father's equipment until
I could afford my own in 1997 or so. In the same time period I found an old Amiga1000
computer and learned about Trackers and even programmed my own music software
in Amiga Basic. The amiga was nice for sound! Later in the 90s I acquired essentials
such as an effects processor pedal (Digitech RP-7) and a multi track recorder
(tascam 4-track cassette recorder). The best thing was a General Music portable
workstation keyboard... or was it when I got my first PC? When I finally got
a job after school the first thing I got was a decent keyboard workstation (Yamaha
psr8000) and then a computer (dell... um, p2 400mhz). After that It was just
a matter of writing some cool songs and making my first album. Volyoom was my
first and is hanging around in several incarnations but Volyoom 1 is the final
and current release.
Right now I use a mix of trackers, my trusty psr8000, various gizmos and instruments
that anyone can afford, and lots of software. I sample, bend, destroy to create,
and many other techniques that probably don't have names. The first and current
album Volyoom 1 is available. It is named for it's obvious technological flavor
and electronic sounds. I'd like to think that it makes audible the conflict
I have in technology being my vice and my peeve. Volyoom 2 & 3 are planned
but not for the near future. They should all have a fluid like electronic sound
based on my muses attitude. Speaking of my muse (who appears on the cover of
Volyoom 1) the tentative title of my next album will be "Flavors of Muse".
This album will show the diversity of my mental illness. Thank you for reading this
