Hey: !Happy "Noche Buena," pues ...! Early Xmas prez -- ertinent sample lines 4 y'all from my new jam "Duality Rap ( I'mma Panther*Pup)":
"Well I'm a big fan of LION CUT/ But I won't say no to a friendly mutt./ Some say gotta choose 'tween Dog and Cat/ But like the Old Skoolerz say, 'That's totally wack' ..."
Say, ace cover story in the new Smithsonian Magazine:
"The Truth About Lions"
Cool! Excellent photos too -- didja know these guys are 400 lbs and 10 FT LONG?
So, I'm a tad confused here; I was reading this below on the NBC San Diego website -- which was using event-descriptive copy from another website -- that accompanied a (welcome!) listing of yer Lion Cut et al. show at Tin Can on Saturday ... But:
"Sarcastically snotty electro pop that’s as “cool as a puma, sleek as a jaguar” and cheesy as Chester Cheetah, it’s the musical equivalent to the kind of throw rugs upon which South American drug lords fornicate. And it’s made in San Diego. (Derrik Chinn, SignOnSanDiego)"
Since when -- and exactly how, evidentiary citing requested, pls. -- is the Lion Cut experience ever, in any way, "[s]arcastically snotty"?
Is it cuz in the "All The Cats,"Zoltron sings, "check-it-out, check-it-out, check-it-out" like a ska kid when, in fact, he is not -- and the song isn't ska? Is Zolly being sarcastic, and snottily so? Making fun of ska, ska kids, ska culture in whatever context intended? Or ...???
Sure, LC is a key influence on this here Panther*Pup -- but I didn't pick up any o' that from you nice folk; the sarcasm and the (righteous?) slightly snotty tinge of my debut hit "Melanistic Dominant (Gibsonian Defective)" -- well, I came up w/ that allll by my black-furred lonesome ... Just a-wonderin' and a-sayin'; and all press is good press ... Paws Forward, Rock On!
Yo, Lion Cut: thanx for inspiration and facilitating Panther*Pup's live debut at the Tin Can Ale Haus the other week -- here're some shots of youse, best I could manage w/ a digi-cam in me paws ... LC in profile: LC ... ooh, feelin' it:
"... Toshirô Mifune’s feral turn as a bandit who may be the culprit ... Famously instructed to mimic the predatory slink of a hungry lion, he tacitly embodies the movie's contention that humans are never far from regressing to their bestial origins ..."
"To prepare for Seven Samurai and Rashomon, Mifune reportedly studied footage of lions in the wild ..."
LC, ooh-whee -- thanx for all! The Tin Can show r-r-r-ruled; and the Panther*Pup is off 'n' slinkin' ... But I'm a bit under the weather: didn't sleep much after the show, off to SD airport at 5 am next morn -- and proceeded to enjoy the worst travel day in USA since post-9-11, due to FAA glitch pushing flights off-sched all over the country. My 1.5 hr layover in Denver became 5.5 hrs -- got home to Philly at 10:30 pm, etc. However -- before downloading nifty trip fotos, I took one last snap, a homecoming:
A groggy Prince Leo sez, "Hiya -- more Panther*Pup, pls ..."
So F'ING excited ... yes, by OurStill-Defending Still-Champion Phillies staying alive in World Series w/ win last night over Yanks, but also, cuz I just wrote my first Panther*Pup song: "Melanistic Dominant" ! It's about (sticking up for) a big "black panther" -- jaguar -- I saw in a bloody/dopey Mel GibsonMayan-era movie (and is viable as a F*S number) ...
In non-black cat/Panther*Pup developments, Lea bids ye a sleepy hullo:
Yo-Yo, Mah Muh'Fuh'Cuttin' Lion Cut Muf'Fuh'Kuzzz!!! --
Ev'rybody knows to look at alllll the quality comments here below, right? But after my first Bris last night (and, later, umpteenth Bruce show*) -- and bringing a suitable baby gift (but not before foto-documenting) -- YES, it's time for another D*Star to Lion Cut photo-triple-play:
Yes, saw Bruce Springsteen and the E St. Band do a special, epic show: mid-3-hr. set, doing ALL of the 1978 Darkness On the Edge of Town album. Powerful ... And LC fans should check out Zolly's side-project band the Free*Stars getting all Springsteen-ian over on F*S proper while all three parts of "SpringTrane: 'Seraphic Light' Frames an 'Incident' in the 'Darkness on the Edge of Town'" are up.
Are Os Mutantes members Bia Mendes and (founder) Sergio Dias (my foto below) the Brazilian Kittytron and Zoltron? Of this I know not. (I do now Mutantes ruled in Philly the other day; said so in print: http://www.philly.com/inquirer/magazine/63656152.html ...)
But, of course, y'all wanna know what Lion Cut is em português, right? either the literal "Cut of Lion": Corte do Leão or "Hairstyle of Lion": Penteado do Leão
Meet the newest Auxilliary Free*Star, a genuine Brooklyn hipster:
She's Anabel*Star (my niece from impending nuptials), 9 mos. old, already highly musical -- she's mastered that auto-instrumentation technique where ya brush your index finger up and down over yer lips while voicing sound. She busts out in solos at any given time and always will jam with you if you start up yourself -- duets, call and response, etc. I've got some recorded, wanna incorporate in F*S tuneage soon ...
Here she is "playing" and, maybe, her publicity/promo shot (I took both):
Guess what? I got paid to go see the Dave Matthews band the other night! Kinda ouch - 2 hrs I'll never have back - but my wallet is fatter! Dave sang, "I like my coffee with toast and jelly/ But I'd rather be licking/ From your back to your belly" -- and the sorority girls went wiiiiiiild! It suuuuuuuucked!
Here's a young lady w/ better taste who wasn't there - she belongs in the gallery of other patriotic Mexi-youth - but if she had been, I imagine this might be here assessment: none too impressed ("Ay, pinche mamon, ese tipo ...")
Did you remember to celebrate Mexican Independence Day on Tuesday?
I did; went down to a huge gathering on the shores of the Delaware River -- flag-waving, gritos, ranchera bands, chow, lotsa concessions ... and families.
And THAT means, yes, Mexi-tots and Mexi-shavers galore! To-wit:
More shows -- cool! BTW, I recently swapped in some timely live trax on F*S Central: "Back To School" (cuz the kids went back yesterday) -- Jim's sax sounds nyze; and Los PARANOIAS doing "Back in the CCCP" (cuz, y'know, today is quite the Beatles Day and all).
Below is latest household addition Lea aka "Squeakles" -- and aka "Skwinkles" after I later found a rank Mex candy product of the same name in a local bodega ...
Just kidding! But that song definitely made me laugh a lot...
Great to hear what you've been up to... wondered from time to time about you folks and glad to see that you're still in SD and being creative.
We're actually coming to SD to play a show on Friday October 9th at the Habitat. Would be great to see you both while we're down there, so please come if you can...
