Lionel "Lanky" Belasco was born in Barbados in 1881 and raised in Trinidad. His mother played classical piano, while his father sang baritone and played the organ and violin.
He grew up in Trinidad, being taught classical piano by his mother but also experimenting with "bush music" as he called it.
As a teenager, he traveled around the Caribbean and South America, absorbing various forms of music.
He returned to Trinidad in 1914 to make his first record with Victor Recording Company. Soon thereafter, he traveled to New York, where he made more recordings.
He died in New York city on June 24th, 1967.
