Lipstick Torpedo have been around for several years now. They rose from the ashes of Sawney Bean, a five piece manic rock tribute band that played the toilets of North London and Hertfordshire for a while in the early nineties. Anybody who was lucky enough to catch them live will confirm that a Sawney Bean gig was nothing less than an event, frequently culminating in bloodshed and trashed venues. Sawney Bean eventually imploded due to mental instability in the ranks and a lack of places to play due to an ever widening blanket ban.
Forward a few years to 1999 where, after much searching for like minded musical souls, three members of Sawney Bean were magnetically drawn back together and, due to a group love of drinking alcohol and dressing up in ludicrous clothes (not to mention a shared appreciation of Beavis and Butthead and Frank Zappa), formed what was to become Lipstick Torpedo.
Early gigs were spent dressing in various outfits including full Arab battle dress, Salvation Army Women's uniforms and various famous people from history who wore beards, but again and again they were drawn to the Glam Rock look until it was decided to go with it full time as it seemed the thing that pleased the audiences most and gave the band a chance to drift more towards the music they loved. For all their outward embracing of the satin 'n' tat trash aesthetic, all three band members are very accomplished musicians who have all served their time in many other bands and have been around the musical block several times each. They are also fond of a multitude of four letter words and have been known to offend delicate ears at 100 paces.
As time has moved on Lipstick Torpedo have developed a very confident approach to their music and began to experiment more and more outside the glam genre until todays melting pot of a set was reached with a potent mix of glam, metal and pop, all thrashed out at an uncompromising volume.
The days of smashed dressing rooms, battered audience members and trashed instruments are now long gone, but many people will still attest to the fact that a Lipstick Torpedo gig is an event that, once witnessed will be remembered for years to come.
Remember kids, Lipstick Torpedo say "Swearing is big and it is clever !!"
Forgive the intrusion, I know posting up flyers and stuff on other peoples myspaces is a lil tacky but I wanted to share my christmas single with you, and with everyone
Thanks for a great set at our party on Saturday. You brought a grin to the face of many a mean and moody biker. I've never seen so many of them singing along! Hope to see you again soon. Jayne x
Finally got round to having a look at your profile (don't usually add bands/people I don't already know) and your shows look like a lot of fun - will have to try and catch your set sometime...
