Do not conform any longer to the pattern of this world, but be transformed by the renewing of your mind. Then you will be able to test and approve what God's will is—his good, pleasing and perfect will. [Romans 12:2]
So I say, live by the Spirit, and you will not gratify the desires of the sinful nature. For the sinful nature desires what is contrary to the Spirit, and the Spirit what is contrary to the sinful nature. They are in conflict with each other, so that you do not do what you want. But if you are led by the Spirit, you are not under law.
The acts of the sinful nature are obvious: sexual immorality, impurity and debauchery; idolatry and witchcraft; hatred, discord, jealousy, fits of rage, selfish ambition, dissensions, factions and envy; drunkenness, orgies, and the like. I warn you, as I did before, that those who live like this will not inherit the kingdom of God.
But the fruit of the Spirit is love, joy, peace, patience, kindness, goodness, faithfulness, gentleness and self-control. Against such things there is no law. Those who belong to Christ Jesus have crucified the sinful nature with its passions and desires. Since we live by the Spirit, let us keep in step with the Spirit. Let us not become conceited, provoking and envying each other. [Galatians 5:16-26]
For God so loved the world that He gave His one and only Son, that whoever believes in Him shall not perish but have eternal life. For God did not send His Son into the world to condemn the world, but to save the world through Him. Whoever believes in Him is not condemned, but whoever does not believe stands condemned already because he has not believed in the name of God's one and only Son. This is the verdict: Light has come into the world, but men loved darkness instead of light because their deeds were evil. Everyone who does evil hates the light, and will not come into the light for fear that his deeds will be exposed. But whoever lives by the truth comes into the light, so that it may be seen plainly that what he has done has been done through God. [John 3:16-21]
The music on this page was written in 2005-06 and recorded in the Spring of 2006, using 2 mics, a guitar, and Garage Band on a Mac laptop. So the sound quality is a bit rough, but I wanted to get my music out there so it could bless others. Check it out and let me know what you think ;)
My name is Lisa Birman, and I am a musician/singer/songwriter. I began playing music at a very young age and it has always been an important part of my life. In 3rd grade I learned how to play the piano, performed in several recitals, and then quit because I didn't want to practice. However in 6th grade I picked up my next instrument, which was the flute. I excelled at flute and made first chair in my school band. In eighth grade I began singing in choir, where I was a featured soloist and I absolutely loved being on stage. Thus I continued singing throughout high school, and belonged to the Concert Choir, Chorale, and a women's Sextet. My high school competed in a number of musical events, and one year my solo put our group in first place in the national competition.
I decided to continue with my music in college, and obtained a minor in Music with a concentration in Vocal Performance. I attended Point Loma Nazarene University where I also took Music Theory, Private Voice, Conducting, and Guitar classes in addition to being in a women's Treble Choir. After college I joined a church band, where I sang and sometimes played the guitar. At one point the bass player dropped out, so I bought a bass and amp, and volunteered to become the new bass player! Bass was really easy for me to learn because I already knew the guitar, and to this day the bass guitar is my favorite instrument to play. With the close comraderie of my church band members, 3 of us decided to form a cover band and play together outside of the church. Being avid baseball fans, we named the band "Full Count" and played 60s to 90s mainstream music at parties, weddings, and special events.
After my band days I became a DJ for KCR, a college radio station, and then with World Music Radio, an independent internet broadcast station (1998-2002). During this time I explored many new genres of music, and became entranced by world percussion. In 2000 I joined a Brazilian Samba group and began playing Brazilian Capoeira, I learned not only the dance but various percussion instruments. I continued with Brazilian percussion and dance through 2007, during which time I also learned the Portuguese language. My song "Uma Vida Novou" is written and sung in Brazilian Portuguese.
I believe musical talent is a God-given gift, and because I have been blessed with this gift I want to use it to share His message with others. Shortly after I wrote and recorded these songs I had the opportunity to perform at an open mic in San Diego California, and have otherwise only played these songs for family and friends. I have finally decided to go public with my music, primarily because most of the people I know do not even know I am a singer/songwriter so I might as well put it out there. In addition I realize my life touches a lot of people, many of whom do not always know or understand WHY I am in their lives - perhaps only to share God's love and be a LIGHT in the darkness.
Most importantly, I realize that because my music is Christian and of a devotional nature, that it will not resonate with all listeners - and that's ok. I pray that God will speak to you in some way through this music or through my life by example, as I am living for God, according to His Word as best as I can. For this I am often persecuted or misunderstood, as the practice of Biblical, moral, and ethical conduct is generally foreign to those who deny God, or reject the idea of having a personal relationship with Him. However, He created the heavens and the Earth, and He likewise created YOU with the ability to choose your life's path, whether moral or immoral. I hope that you will be blessed by this music, and that your soul may be humbled in His presence.
