  • Bio

CARAVAN dropped in 2010, was produced and arranged by Lisa and has been named to the "Best of 2010" by the Jazz Journalists Association. Get your copy of "Caravan" at www.lisaengelken.com. _________________________________________________________________________ Jazz critic Christopher Loudon writes in JazzTimes Sept. 2010 Issue: "She is an utter original. Blessed with superlative power, control and range. Engelken can, as mood requires, be as soft as dew or as intense as a sleet storm; her interpretive instincts are astounding. In short, Engelken defines the 'extra' in extraordinary." _______________________________________________________________________ LISA ENGELKEN is a fearless singer, a tonic performing artist, with an original compositional & arranging sensibility. "Part freight train, part junkyard trombone, ENGELKEN alternately locomotes and floats through tunes." ................... "BOLD, LUSH, EXOTIC, and just a little bit dangerous; like EVEL KNIEVEL and JANIS JOPLIN. Like EVEL, she is a fearless daredevil, but never reckless, knowing exactly whether her voice can jump through a ring of fire and over 30 elephants--or whether it can go 31. And like JANIS, she gives every ounce of herself onstage." (Erin Gray, columnist for the Monterey Herald.) ....................................................CARAVAN features 10 of her arrangements: standards, Brazilian, & contemporary tunes adapted to the jazz idiom (e.g., Billy Idol's "White Wedding", Joni Mitchell's "Trouble Child"). Lisa is grateful to have received FREDDIE HUBBARD's approval before he passed last December of her arrangement with original lyrics to the jazz-funk classic "Red Clay" (under the title "From the Earth"). ........................................................As a jazz vocalist, Engelken is dubbed the "second trumpet" for her 4-octave range, horn-like scatting and tonal clarity, careening through a myriad of moods & vocal styles, spicing her repertoire with Portuguese, French, Spanish & Italian. ...............................................With her theatrical training, Lisa places strong emphasis on telling the story particular to each song & insists on harmonic arrangements that further convey the song's subtext. Her classical voice training permits her to roller coaster 'round an impressive 3-octave range. ....................................................Lisa has performed with JOHN CAMERON MITCHELL (Down the Rabbit Hole, Hedwig & the Angry Inch, Shortbus) and has previously worked with JCMI & composer STEPHEN TRASK on the highly acclaimed SF production of the rock musical HEDWIG & THE ANGRY INCH (2003-2004). Lisa portrayed Yitzhak, for which she received the BAY AREA THEATRE CRITICS CIRCLE AWARD as BEST SUPPORTING ACTRESS ........................................................................Recent appearances include the 2010 SFJAZZ Summer Fest Concert Series, the Fillmore Jazz Festival 2010, and the San Jose Jazz Festival. She has shared the stage with TOM WAITS, LOW, T-BONE BURNETT, YO LA TENGO.....................................................................Cutting her teeth in clubs in Italy, Lisa eventually landed in DC to become the notorious front-woman for DC urban lounge sextet THE ZIMMERMANS- for which she garnered the WAMMIE Award for Best Female Vocalist. LISA has performed at such prestigious festivals as SOUTH BY SOUTHWEST (SXSW) in Austin; NORTH BY NORTHEAST (NXNE) in Toronto, NEW YORK NEW MUSIC FESTIVAL, and the PHILADELPHIA MUSIC CONFERENCE. She has played The Knitting Factory, the Bottom Line and the Mercury Lounge in New York; Blues Alley, 9:30 Club, and the Black Cat (Wash., DC). .................Lisa also fronted the theatrical, chaos-pop ensemble the SUGAR LA LAS (Birminham, AL) and co-founded & fronted the velvet-lounge quintet BLACK OLIVE. She also funked out with an explosive all-woman FUNKADELIC/PARLIAMENT band in NYC, featuring powerful women from groups ANNEX, LUNA CHICKS and SEX POD. ........Engelken's current projects/collaborations include the original chamber jazz group the MUTUAL ADMIRATION ORG. & the Zappa-esque orchestral bliss & madness of ADMIRAL TED BRINKLEY. .. .. .. .. .. .. .. .. ................MUSIC HERE on myspace: 8 excerpts from "Caravan"; an original song by Lisa AIN'T DEAD YET, described as a "Salvation Army swamp gospel" composed for the stage production A LIE OF THE MIND (Sam Shepard). TWISTED, was performed live in concert at the JAZZSCHOOL in Berkeley. .. .. V4.4..
