For CD orders, up to date news, pics, clips, and tour dates please see Lisa's home website:.. http://www.lisafurukawa.com .... Lisa Furukawa is a Japanese-American pianist, singer, songwriter. Lisa's performances and recordings display a fusion of folk, alternative chamber pop, and electronica. She has released four albums of original music. Lisa has performed at many cultural festivals, anime and sci-fi conventions, and toured various venues around the world. Lisa's soulful ballads vary in style from delicate and intricate piano arrangements to celtic jigs. Often inspired by myth and spiritual themes, an array of characters make their way into the songs. Stone Buddhas, Greek chorus, the Dragon king tending to his garden in the sea, Apsu and Tiamat framing the story of sunlight and ancestory.. "I am constantly inspired and curious about myth-the stories that have shaped our cultures from ancient times. I think its vastly interesting how the majority of people in Japan believed that the emperor was divine until WWII. But what's more interesting is how the myths have continually shaped modern life and spirituality. I think much heartache and divison in the world would be alleviated by people reaching out to understand each other's cultures and stories. To see that no matter how different we may seem, we are all human-full of dignity, and worthy of equal respect. Sometimes I just want to write a simple love song; music can be personal therapy, or an abstract piece of art depending on how you're feeling in the moment. But as a performing songwriter, I have an opportunity to not just express the music of my imagination, but to tell stories. I love that." Lisa received BAs in Music and Asian Studies from University of North Carolina at Chapel Hill. In addition to recording and performing her own music, she is currently developing fun recordings and educational materials from her teaching programs to help children learn Japanese through music and stories. Lisa has been a piano instructor, a band and choral director, a Japanese language teacher, an ESL teacher, and a translator. She has developed multiple music and language programs for various schools, conventions, cultural events, and camps.

LISA FURUKAWA is a Japanese-American pianist, singer, educator, and songwriter. Utilizing her talents in contemporary and classical music, Lisa's performances and recordings display a fusion of Japanese folk, alternative pop, and electronica.

Her latest recording, "Reaching the Dragon" was released in April, 2006. Lisa composed, produced, and performed all of the songs on the new CD. The new work displays a subtle combination of electronic arrangements, piano, and vocals in Japanese and English.

"Reaching the Dragon" is ambient and lush, and remains hopeful even through the most melancholy moments. Always fascinated by myth and history, Lisa looked to the Eastern myths and folklore of dragons for inspiration. Lisa says, "Reaching the dragon is about tapping into the yang spirit, strong basic life force, and accepting change and transformation."

Lisa has three CDs of original songs published through her Yume label. Her first recording, This Moment is the Show, is an intimate CD of solo piano and vocal arrangements. Her second CD, Pearl Diver, is a collaborative piece that originated from Lisas piano and vocal compositions, but was realized and recorded with cellist, Deborah Shields and percussionist, John Metcalf. Her CDs are available for purchase at http://www.lisafurukawa.com.

Lisa has performed at various events and festivals, and has entertained audiences in large and small atmospheres. Currently, she is enjoying her appearances and performances at various anime conventions and cultural events around the US and Canada. She is exploring the electro/dub sound while composing for the multi-art and multimedia dance troupe -The Wandering Star Project. She hopes to continue pushing technological boundaries while continuing to contribute a lyrical vocal element to electronic music. When she isn't performing or teaching, she contributes her time and efforts to helping several charitable organizations by directing events such as the annual Tori Amos Tribute Show/RAINN Benefit and the Triangle Asian-American Music Festival.

Originally from Tokyo, Japan, Lisa began studying the piano at the age of three. She has BAs in Music and Asian Studies from UNC-Chapel Hill, and is an educator and translator as well as a performing songwriter. She has translated everything from pop tunes to state songs into Japanese, and hopes to promote cultural understanding and diversity through music.
