Beloved, pioneering, dyke performance poet Lisa King died on February 13, 2006 in Somerville, MA at the age of 45. You can see photos of Lisa and read tributes from a variety of people who knew her at http://www.truthserum.org/lisaking.
Lisa was a wonderful writer and performer who was part of the champion National Poetry Slam team in 1993, was featured in the film SlamNation and founded the National Queer Slam at Outwrite (a national GLBT writers' conference) in 1995. She inspired audiences and humbled fellow writers whenever she got in front of a mike. The audio tracks are from a live recording of poetry she performed to win a championship bout of The Amazon Slam (an acclaimed all-woman poetry slam that ran in Boston from 1996-2004) in December of 1996. These tracks were taken from a cassette, so please excuse a little hum and hiss. Download the MP3s or click to listen. Some additional audio of Lisa from the same performance is on this page. If you are renaming MP3s please make sure you include "LisaKing" in the title. She wanted her name and her work to be known.
"....Poets are like stars/They pierce through the darkness of time,/ to deliver image and emotion from the void./ And unfortunately like stars,/they may already be dead/by the time their light/reaches you." Lisa King 1996
