About me:

Hmm...well, the most important thing in my life is my Sasuke Face. We met at awa 12, and he proposed to me at awa 13. We are getting married at AWA 16. We love anime, and it plays a big part in our lives. We love to cosplay and go to cons, but we also like to just laze around and watch anime all day on the computer together. We like playing halo together too.

= How many years have you cosplayed? 5

= How did you get into cosplaying? I wanted to for a long time, but I couldn’t until I got a job when I was a senior in 2005. I think all it really takes is a love of anime and dressing up to want to cosplay.

= What was your first convention and how did it go? Anime Weekend Atlanta 7 (2001) It was pretty fun. I was there for a few hours on Saturday with my dad. He was as amused as I was ^_^

[Your Cosplays]

= What was your first cosplay and why did you choose it? Oiroke/Sexy no Jutsu Naruto, because I really liked the character, and it was before the whole world cosplayed Naruto characters and made me sick of it

= What is your favorite cosplay you've done so far? Probably ANBU Naruto (minus that awful wig), because it was the one I worked the hardest on, and the one I was wearing when Sasuke proposed to me. I had a lot of fun as Samus too though.

= What is your least favorite you've cosplayed? “School version" Misa. I hated cosplaying Misa because it’s so overdone by people wearing random stuff they got at Hot Topic. The “first appearance” version I did was a lot better, but still not as enjoyable because I didn’t feel like anyone noticed the effort I made to be accurate.

= What cosplay is the most uncomfortable? Any of my crossplays. I like being able to breathe.

[Process]

= How do you research the cosplay before you make it? Well watching and reading the series helps a lot. I also collect entirely too many pictures of all angles of the cosplay, as well as look at bad attempts so I know specifically what NOT to do.

= Do you sew your cosplays yourself? Sometimes, if it’s feasible, I try to find normal clothes that can be altered into what I need. Most of the time, though, that just won’t look good enough, so I do my best to construct whatever it is.

= If so, how did you learn to sew? If not, do you plan to learn? I learned to sew by trying to alter and construct clothes in high school.

= Do you make your own props? Sasuke and I work together on them, but yes.

= If so, how did you learn to? If not, do you plan to learn? I don’t think it’s really anything you learn. I just look around my house and stores until I find something (or a whole bunch of somethings) that I think I can turn into something else. Sculpey works wonders, though.

= Do you style your own wigs? I tried once, and though it may have been acceptable to some people, I didn’t like how it looked on me. I think my massive amount of hair just pushed the wig out too much for my head to look normal-sized. I try to just find a wig that needs minimal altering or pick a character whose hair mine is already like.

= What other skills do you use to create your cosplays? Obsessive-compulsive persistence?

= What skill has been most useful for making your cosplay? Knowing how to use a sewing machine, and getting one whose zigzag stitch atually works.

= What is the hardest thing when making a cosplay? Finishing it sooner than the night before I plan to wear it…

= What was the biggest screw up you've had making a cosplay? Ordering a wig that couldn’t be teased without showing the cap, trying to use medical tape for ninja wrap, dying someone’s hair with Kool-Aid, trying to bend sheet metal around a baseball bat, using staples, depending on satin ribbon to stay tied, spilling spirit gum all over a tunic and pants, trying to use spirit gum at all (I have to use super glue), making things too small, and for some reason thinking zippers might lay flat.

= How often do you injure yourself while making a cosplay? Quite often, especially when hand sewing, especially shoes

[Budget]

= On average, how much will you spend on cosplay in one year? (not including conventions, etc) about $300 I think?

= Do you try to stay cheap or do you splurge on materials? I try to stay cheap. I use the clothes I have and hand-me-downs for fabric when I can.

[Conventions]

= What is your favorite convention? AWA hands down. The best things in my life happen at AWA.

= What conventions have you gone to? Anime Weekend Atlanta, Atlanta Comic Con (it was so tiny!), Katsucon, Momocon

= How far have you traveled for a convention? 700 miles

= Do you usually stay in a hotel or stay at home when you can? We always stay in the con hotel unless it’s Momocon, where we sleep in the car.

= What was your worst convention experience? Katsucon 2008, because everyone in the room was fighting, and multiple people unintentionally brought blankets and such with dog hair on them, so Sasuke was practically half-dead the whole time. (He is allergic to dogs and has asthma. O.o) AWA 2006 was as bad as it was good; I got about 4 hours of sleep the whole three days because I had to take care of drunken idiots all night, but I met Sasuke when I could escape from the mess.

= Have you ever cosplayed with a partner or group? Yes, for all but one of my cosplays

= Do you try to act in character? Not usually; I think it’s annoying most of the time.

= Have you ever done fanservice at a con? (Yaoi, yuri, etc.) Yes, it’s one of the main points of our cosplay choices ^.^;

= How do you react to cosplayers dressed as characters from the same anime? Usually I just nod or smile an acknowledgment to them, but we may stop and talk or take photos together. If they're the same character I am, or someone I have done, I discreetly get very analytical and hope I'm doing better...Is that mean?

= Do you try to duplicate your character's expressions, walk, movements, etc? I do when it is essential to the character.

= When crossplaying, do you try to act as much like the gender as possible? I just act like myself, because I don’t act very girly anyway. I do try to minimize any obvious girlishness though, like standing on one leg with a hip out or crossing my legs when I sit, as well as pushing my shoulders forward a bit to minimize my chest.

= What was your funniest experience of acting in character? I don’t know if it counts as in character, but SasuNaru-ing is always great.

= What was your worst experience acting in character? It wasn’t in character, but there was an awful Sakura cosplayer who couldn’t have been older than thirteen harassing Sasuke at AWA 2007, going so far as wrapping her hands around his throat and choking him whenever she got the chance. Good grief she ticked me off.

[Competition]

= Do you compete in cosplay contests? No, I have some serious stage fright. I'm trying to get over it though, because Sasuke wants me to compete with him.

= Do you prefer skits or walk-ons? Walk-ons. Skits just don’t have a good chance of being enjoyable.

[Community]

= How many friends have you made because of cosplay? Upwards of 20 that I would actually call friends

= Are you a part of any convention or cosplay forums? Yes, especially the AWA & cosplay.com forums

= Do you attend photoshoots and meet-ups outside of conventions? We want to, but we haven’t been able to yet.

= What is the funniest reaction you've gotten cosplaying from people outside of conventions? When parents who have no idea what they’re talking about get all excited and say “My son/daughter watches that show!” or “Is that from, like, that Dragonball Z stuff?” or when people in Washington, D.C. were talking about how insane we were for having our ninja shoes on while walking in the snow.

= What was the worst? When people told me my anbu Naruto hair was wrong. I KNOW. I hated it too.

[Future]

= How long do you think you'll be cosplaying for? As long as there are characters I can pull off. It probably won’t be fun when I get old and wrinkly, though I’ve seen Kaedes and Master Roshis that were inspiring.

= Name a few cosplays you're planning to do next: Hinamori Amu from Shugo Chara, Maka Albarn from Soul Eater

= What is your dream cosplay? I'm not really sure

[Misc]

= What do you take into consideration when picking a character to cosplay? Whether I think I can make the outfit well, whether I like the character, whether I physically resemble the character, how much it would cost to make, how difficult it would be to move around at a con in it, how much of the general populace would enjoy it, and how hot or cold or comfortable it would be to wear.

= Is cosplay a serious business for you? It is in that I love doing it and I want to do it well.

= What is your favorite thing about cosplay? It is fun! Everybody likes being proud of something they made and getting compliments on it. It’s really fun to make other people smile. And who doesn’t like dressing up?

= What is your least favorite? How judgmental people can be. I don’t like that the more money you have, the better your cosplay turns out. I also hate that a person’s physical (read: unchangeable) appearance is so important in judging how well they pull off the cosplay.

= What is it that makes you keep cosplaying? It's fun, unlike wearing normal clothes to cons.

= How would you like cosplaying to change in the future? I would like to see people stop buying cosplay items from Hot Topic. I would like to see more people making their own costumes instead of commissioning/buying them. I would like to see more people take risks by not cosplaying the most popular characters, and for them to get more love for it.

= How do you want to grow as a cosplayer? I want to be able to sew anything from scratch.
