By making these dolls, families have been fed, lights have been turned on, little children have gone to school, water has poured out taps... but most of all, hope has been restored.
"Little Travellers" are beautiful, personable, and unique beaded pins that are made by women affected by HIV/AIDS in South Africa, as part of an income-generation project of the Hillcrest AIDS Centre. Little Travellers are sold for $5 (though larger donations are always gratefully accepted), with absolutely all of that amount going to help in the fight against HIV/AIDS in the communities of The Valley of a Thousand Hills in South Africa - part of it goes to pay the crafters, enabling them to earn a living to support their families; and the remainder to the Hillcrest AIDS Centre to help fund their home-based care program and respite unit. Little Travellers make beautiful stocking stuffers/holiday gifts that you can feel good about giving! For a complete list of stores carrying Little Travellers, please see the "Buy Dolls" section.
Simunye Initiative
Simunye is a group of students (from University of Manitoba Medical Sciences and beyond) and concerned global citizens. Our name is borrowed from a Zulu term meaning, "we are united". Our goal is to elicit support for the Hillcrest AIDS Centre, a non-governmental, non-profit organization whose mission is to give unconditional love to all those infected, and affected, by AIDS. For more information on how you join us in standing united with those battling HIV/AIDS in South Africa, please visit our "Get Involved" section.
Hillcrest AIDS Centre
Located in the AIDS-ravaged Valley of a Thousand Hills - where an estimated 40% of the population is infected with HIV - the Hillcrest AIDS Centre stands as a beacon of hope. The Centre's mission is quite simply to show "unconditional love to all those infected and affected by HIV/AIDS in a practical way"; they achieve this by providing home-based care, nutrition schemes, education, testing and counseling services, a fledging respite unit, as well as economic empowerment through income generation projects . It is through one of these income generation projects, called "Woza Moya" (Zulu for "come spirit" or "come change") that Little Travellers are made and sent to Canada, with a little help from the Simunye Initiative.
Thank you for adding me! I really hope that through this network we can raise awareness of the plight of the people in South Africa who have to live with HIV/AIDS every day!

We, the Baobab Family run a house for homeless orphans in Mikidani, a suburb of Mombasa, Kenya. Recently we started a hiv-awareness & care programm in kenya couse we cannot stand aside and just look on how the people are dying and more and more orphans are forced to live on the streets of Africa.
If you are interested in our work please take the time to have a look at the "Forthcoming targets" page on our website (http://baobab-family-project.org/index.php?id=1&L=1).
