Laura Commented: Ailey II-What an energizing and engaging performance Tuesday night! Performers were so talented as they switched from modern to jazz to ballet, diversifying styles even within one dance. I loved the comedy of solo dance Takademe and the variation on the theme of "The House of the Rising Sun." Dancers showed not only a command of body but a pulse of soul. Thanks for the experience.
I’m not Dave Dunkle, Jane Holohan or Larry Alexander, and I SHOULD stay away from “reviews”, but Lori and I just got back from the opening of “The Boy Friend” at HACC. Certainly an evening well-spent and a recommended ticket. Not SERIOUS stuff, but if you prefer the lighter side, with laughs and lots of energetic dancing and singing, try to make it. An exuberant bunch of younger performers, anchored by veterans Ken Robinson, Kevin Pry and Connie Fisher (names who’ve meant a lot locally over the past 25-30 years), along with Stacie Johnsen (who is in her final local appearance before taking up the role of the Widow Corney in a national tour of “Oliver”), keep it brisk and entertaining. In my humble opinion, several standouts among the younger set, but none caught my eye or my admiration more than a young man named Adam Newborn, who was a featured dancer in the ensemble. For me, he had polish, energy, and precision not often seen in local productions and really stood out whenever on stage. But all the folks really put their best dancing feet forward. I liked the set and the lighting; just some minor issues with the mike levels at the beginning. Admirable direction and choreography. Orchestra sounded good to me. Thru Sunday. 231-ROSE
