Live From the Fallout Shelter is a radio program broadcast every Monday night from 8-11pm on 91.5 FM, WUML, Lowell. Each week we feature a band playing live from the studio. When the bands are not playing, you can hear an awesome mix of indie and punk music, with maybe a little jazz or alt county thrown into the mix.
Live From the Fallout Shelter was started in April of 1985 by DJs Chris Porter and Bob Weston. The first band to be featured on the show was Beginners Only. Since then over 500 bands have made it down to the studios to perform on Monday nights, and an extremely dedicated crew has kept the show going all these years.
Some bands of note that have played Live From the Fallout Shelter include The Lot Six, The Pills, Read Yellow, Six Going on Seven, Converge, The High Back Chairs (Dischord Records), Chris Brokaw, Tiger Saw, The Shods, Rein Sanction (Sub Pop), Green Magnet School (Sub Pop), Damnation AD (Jade Tree Records), The Moving Targets, Always August (SST Records), Jones Very (Jade Tree Records), Uncle Tupelo, and the Pixies, who had their Live From the Fallout Shelter set list reprinted in the September 2004 issue of SPIN.
We are currently planning a two disc retrospective of Live From the Fallout Shelter to celebrate our 20th birthday that will be released on Gatehouse Anchor.
Call us up at 978-934-4969 on Mondays between 8pm and 11 pm to make requests. We'll also send you stickers if you ask. For the tech savy, you can also IM us at falloutradio.
Our listening area extends north to Manchester, NH, west to Worcester, MA, and south to the north of Boston, and all points within a big circle that connects those places.
As a fund raising project for Live From the Fallout Shelter, we released two of our favorite performances of 2004 on a vinyl 7 inch. Taxpayer performs "Cut It Again" from their 4/5/04 appearance. Tanks performs "No" from their 9/20/04 appearance. The record is on opaque red vinyl or opaque blue vinyl, and all have handmade, hand numbered jackets. The record is $4 and all money raised goes to WUML!
WUML, one of oldest college stations in the country is in danger of being taken over the University Administration! All your favorite shows would be turned into boring bland radio, just so some high ranking officials in the U-Mass system can make a few more bucks. But you can help! Please visit http://www.wuml.org for info on where to send your letters of protest to help keep WUML on the air and student run.
