About me:

add Last name: Li | message | block

"People either love me or they hate me, or they don't really care."

Well if I seem a little strange, that's because I am.
My name is Vanessa, most people just call me Nessa.
I'm just me and I don't pretend to be anyone else.
Who am I? Well, to sum it up: I'm a visual artist, fashion disciple, feminist, community worker, queer young person, progressive thinker...
Sometimes I'm the center of attention and sometimes I'm a loner. I have a balance.
I have been getting out of my bubble and working hard at maintaining a positive attitude because life is so much better that way.
I'm a visual arts major at School of the Arts, currently in my senior year.

I'm a San Franciscan, born and raised.
I used to complain a lot about how boring this city was, but now I really appreciate it.
I love it here.
I work and play in the Castro and downtown, don't be surprised if you see me there.

I call most people grul, hun, love, darling, things like that.. if you find that offensive then just tell me.

The world fascinates me.
People who want to start drama with me: It isn't 2005 anymore, I am hella over and done with "myspace" drama. That was some middle school and freshman year shit--I grew up from it, please consider doing the same. DELETE ME if you have a problem, I really can't make it more clear.

You can wave your cross in my face; just don't shove it down my throat. And expect me to wave my rainbow flag in return. I do not belong to a religion and I have a unique world view. I do not need a book to help decide how to live my life. I find it disgusting that anyone would use their religion or faith as an excuse to discriminate and hate against certain people. I am not silly enough to hate people because of their religion, and if someone uses their religion as a reason for hatred, I am too good to stoop down to their level. I will respect you as long as you don't expect others to live by your beliefs. Please understand that freedom of religion also means freedom from religion.

"If a bullet should enter my brain, let the bullet destroy every closet door." Harvey Milk
I read about Harvey Milk for the first time when I was a pre-teen and I was fascinated by how he completely changed San Francisco in such a short amount of time. He inspired me to continue doing the work he started and so now I am giving back. I am here to help anyone who needs support, but especially when it comes to LGBTQQI issues--so if you want someone to talk to, please message me. As a queer young person, I find this topic particularly important.
Something I have to say to all QUEER people and their allies out there is that we've got to continue fighting for civil rights and equality. In this country, we've been given a taste of freedom, and many of us are satisfied with that. We should not be. We need to keep on fighting because separate is inherently not equal and there's no reason why we should have anything less than equality. Those who are against us want us to be content with the taste of freedom we've been given. Do not give up, do not accept the hatred that society forces upon you, and please do not inflict that hatred upon yourself. Don't be embarassed to fight for queer rights and don't be afraid to show pride as an queer person or an ally. You can't just sit back and be content with the little bit of tolerance we have. You have to continue fighting. We need to begin telling our personal stories to those who are against us. Staying in a bubble with our friends won't create change--making connections and showing people who we really are will. Feel free to discuss any of this with me and if you want to debate about something, I'm up for it--I always come back out with even stronger beliefs that it is right for me to continue being a part of the movement.

And it's the same for females and female-identified folks. We've been taught to stay in cliques and hate each other, but we cannot do that any longer. We still live in a patriarchal society and we must be united to fight against our oppression. We must learn to love ourselves and fight against all the womanhatred we've been taught to accept over the course of our lives. This means learning about our bodies, sex, and consequently becoming empowered. We must support women run businesses, listen to music by cool grrls, support women artists.. the list goes on. The feminist movement does not exclude men, and does not only include lesbians with hairy armpits (though they're important too.) Men MUST be a part of the feminist movement, because anyone who isn't a feminist is an asshole. Remember that: not feminist equals asshole. United, we will change society.

"Because they will try to convince us that we have arrived, that we are already there, that 'it' has happened.
Because we need to live in a place where we are truly alive, present, safe, and accounted for.
Because we refuse to allow our writing, songs, art, activism and political histories to be suppressed or stolen.
Because we refuse to be embarassed about the mistakes and faults and choose to move forward with a political agenda bent on freedom of all."

"Fashion is not something that exists in dresses only. Fashion is in the sky, in the street, fashion has to do with ideas, the way we live, what is happening." Mademoiselle Chanel
I don't know why some people have the idea that I dress up for my pictures. Its not true, ask anyone who has seen me in real life--I always look like that. Different occasions, different tones, sure, but my style is the same. Many people don't understand my style and its not important that they do, but I'm sick of people trying to change the way I look. I agree with Vivienne Westwood's statement that most people you see on the street look very boring and don't care to express themselves through their clothing. I never want to be one of those people, dress is the first way I care to express myself in.
My style truly does not fit into a category and I do not wish for it to. I am what I am, a mixture of everything I have found appealing to me in my lifetime. The most dominant influences in the way I dress from day to day is difficult to pin point, as I always get inspired by different things. My wardrobe has changed drastically over the years and it will always continue to evolve.
I'm sick of hearing people claim they don't care about clothes- as if anyone is too good to care about what they put on their own backs. Style rebellion is still a form of self-expression, and if people want to go against fashion they still need clothes to show for it.
I am completely a Yves Saint Laurent girl. His work has inspired me so much and I just adore the support he had for women and their fight for liberation. His clothing is timeless and beautifully made, and I can quote him endlessly. He is as much of a legend as Mademoiselle Chanel and Christian Dior, and rightfully so. He is an endless inspiration to me and my dream is to have his first 1966 Le Smoking suit; my life would be complete.

Nostalgia is like dreaming awake. I am definitely a dreamer. Yves Saint Laurent
I'm really open to talking about fashion and discussing new collections and just anything else. I highly enjoy studying fashion history and my inspiration for dress really comes from anywhere. I still have a lot to learn, but man I will never stop learning it. Some of my favorite designers of the moment are Alexander McQueen, Gareth Pugh, Jean-Charles de Castelbajac, Marc Jacobs, and Alexander Wang.

And my mum said I picky with food! Look at you and all others! This is picky! I'd eat anything apart from peas and soya bean curd! X] Yeah, some bits of that book is quite long, all those research, history and stuff. I read it anyway :p I'm pretty sure I'm still a young, beautiful dyke *sweeps fringe* with no straight tendency, but I wouldn't rule anything out! You're a power feminist, I'm pretty sure you'll not love men in general anytime soon, lol.

I know! XD Returning stuff right after buying them, lol. Just give your sister some money, that's what me and my friends do :p But then, that's not enough "heart" if you get what I mean, soooo up to you! Buy her a block of tofu, lol. Or a tofu toy on eBay, omg! XD Mmm Sexual Fluidity is interesting, init. I remember when I was reading it, I started off with an opened mind, then I clung really strongly to my lesbian label almost half way through, then it diluted again at the end. God, I love women and their... Fluidity.

Ahah I'm always the one breaking up. I'd HATE to have someone I liked breaking up with me, that'd be awful.
I bet it'll feel like forever though. Today I gotta study maths and do some progress on my project. I've done a lot already for philosophy, having test on wednesday.
Yeah, this is my last week as well, thank godddd! We're renting a flat or something on the new year's eve so we can get ready and stuff there, so we can go out later. It's supposed to be amazing, idk, I'm not so excited about going out anymore. Even though I'm going out on the 18th and the 19th.
Ohhh shiiit, 11th grade yet, one more year to go after this one T.T

Haha I still remember your post on Tumblr (or was it Blogger?) when you went back to SF after your trip, with pictures of the London/Paris landmarks X] I can see you as one of those people who burned the flags! :p At the same time, I can see you sticking the flag down a toilet loool.

She's an ally, that's for sure. I'm only friends with LGBT allies, which makes sense. EU36? AWW! That was my shoe size when I was  EIGHT YEARS OLD! XD But then it'd be weird for you to have a size 41 feet, lol. I have the standard model size feet ;D Well at least you're a short girl. Can you imagine how shit your life would be if you're a short boy instead?? :p

Lydia visits the USA... Sounds like a name of a reality show or something :p Someone should use a chainsaw, cut SF and NY off USA, and move them closer to England. AIN'T THAT A GREAT IDEA?! She's 18 and I'm 17! If anyone is to get the "rabbit", it should be her! X] She has watched lesbian films before (I Can't Think Straight) because I made her. Maybe that led her to be more interested in our... Circle. She loves guys though :p Yay! Thank yooooooooooooooou ^__^ Good luck with the shoe hunt! lol. :O What size is your feet?

If I had enough money, I'll come during pride and take you with me to LA buy plane! >:3 Asian (vaginas) invasion, mission begins! *Put on shades, and hold on to the "rabbit"* OMG, speaking of "rabbit" the vibrator, I was SO surprised when my STRAIGHT friend mentioned it last week whilst we were out together XD I was like *GASP*! Radical feminists basically holds an extreme strong view of patriarchy. All men are enemy and all women should be lesbians. Liberal feminists do not see men as enemy although they agree on the patriarchal society's existence. They see improvements in women's position and think we will one day achieve equality. My sociology teacher is a bit of both. Haha, aww bless him. Oh. I was getting excited then. I thought the but was "but I can only stay for a day!". Instead, you won't come at all! -.- Aww, I might visit you someday, with a friend so my mum would let me go, lol. I can actually fake it as a school trip, but I wouldn't go that far, lol.

News on the subject: today he went to my school in the morning. I was pissed about the other day and instead of breaking up I just couldn't do it because I thought it wouldn't happen again. As a result, he saw Madalena and went up to her without even saying bye or anything. It made me so furious, I'm so going to tell him how much of a shit he is when it comes to show how much he likes people. That is, if he likes me, which I'm seriously starting to doubt -.-
God, I'm so turning straight, guys are too much of a pain in the ass t.t

Ahah it's unfairrrr yeah! I don't know how come you handle school and a job. I can hardly keep up with school these days u.u

If I ever need a feminist's point of view, I'll definitely look for you! :p Ehh I don't care about my Myspace anymore, and my way of showing that is by approving everyone's friend requests instead of denying (the majority of) them, lol. I even approved this girl who tried to add me 4+ times, continuously 0__0 She thinks I'm a boy because when she first added me, she said "You're one of the most good looking boys I've ever seen" lol. Or at least something amongst the line. I wonder how she'll feel when she discovers that I'm actually a girl XP

I don't know what to ask either. I'm so tired of clothes, I could just go naked and still feel happy xD Winter is getting really cold here and I have to wear like 10831203 layers of clothes, which is so not sexy...
I guess I'll just end up asking for some random stuff, idk :S
