| General | Pub finds smoking ban loophole: report

The landlady of a pub has exploited a loophole in the country's smoking ban by opening a "smoking research centre" where drinkers can light up legally, reports said Wednesday.
Locals at the Cutting Edge pub in Barnsley, northern England, must fill in a questionnaire on their smoking habits to satisfy legal requirements before sitting down for a drink and a cigarette in the centre.
England and Wales introduced a ban on smoking in enclosed public places in 2007, contributing to tumbling beer sales which have forced over 2,000 pubs to close in the last year, according to the British Beer And Pub Association.
The Cutting Edge's landlady Kerry Fenton opened the centre, which is a separate room in her pub, five days ago.
"It's given business a shot in the arm and it's all in the name of research, legal and above board,"
she told the Sun newspaper.
"I'm a non-smoker but I believe in the freedom of the individual."
The loophole in the law was discovered by pub regular James Martin, a 40-year-old printer. The local council told the paper it intended to enforce the smoking ban at the pub.

Hi, my name is Elaine. I am a UK singer / songwriter / guitarist with a duo / trio / band, "Kindred Spirit" (see the first two friends below).
BANDS PLEASE DON'T MESSAGE ME TO FIND YOU GIGS! I HAVE ENOUGH TROUBLE RINGING ROUND GETTING MY OWN BAND GIGS AND I WON'T REPLY! YOU HAVE TO CONTACT EVENTS /VENUES YOURSELF!
I have set up this site specifically to create a place where both audience and artists can find places where live music is being performed in the UK.
I believe that with the change in the music licensing laws, which are already biting, and the recent change to the smoking laws, live music venues need all the help they can get. This is why I have set up a pub guide (for pubs which host live music) on my main web site (see below for further details) and why I hope this site will help. To that end, the only friends allowed on this site will be venues and events which have live music going on or promoters who work with varied performers and live music venues and who list these venues / events on their site.

Live Music UK Pub Guide
I have started a guide to pubs in the UK, where I and my "Kindred Spirit" musicians have played, or are currently playing, which feature live music.
The guide gives images of the pubs (where we have managed to get them), lists the type of beer and other drinks available, lists any special features (like car park, food, recreational facilities etc.) and give links to the pubs own web sites where available. The pubs tend to be west and south west of London which is the area I and "Kindred Spirit" most often play in.
