"An improvisational chordant deluge of visionary insight into the very fiber of a girl's existence"
Living Jane is to be found in the theatre, on the airwaves, on the television and in real life. She may even be right behind you right now. So watch this space. And keep looking over your shoulder...
Living Jane began singing as soon as she exited her mother's womb, aged 0. Since then she has accomplished many wonderful things. Singing was in her blood from both sides of the family.
Her desire to be on stage began when she was only 6 years old. Her 9-year-old brother was performing in a Christmas Pageant, and she snuck onstage to the delight of the packed auditorium, and wanted to sing along.... She stole the show and everyone's hearts for the duration of the concert.
At 21, she started her singing career, singing radio jingles for a local production company. She then went on the road, performing from Mexico to the Yukon for 11 years. Living Jane got burnt out from the constant touring, and took a break to study animation at Vancouver Film School. She then worked primarily in the Animation Industry for 15 years, and also became a member of UBCP, working as much as was possible in Live Action.
The most significant development of her musical career was the introduction to experimental music in 1992. Seven years into these home-recorded studio sessions, “Living Jane" was born, from her ability to mimic her own voice that had been recorded by a poet friend into a high tech tape recorder named "Jane". He would speed up and slow down and loop her voice, and she would be able to follow the sounds and duplicate them. She became the "Living" Jane.
I can hear the voice of a violin Asking me to follow Into the fog The moon looks hollow and There's an ominous feel To the Totem Poles A black forest In the hole Not seeming real…
(Nothing seems real)… But the notes As they float Around All thru space And sweet the night with melody...
There's a bird There's a forest bird Who's song is heard And you think to yourself You brought the dark Into celebration Your wings spread out Over the sky As you fly near me In my dreams
Living Jane caught the ear of Janis Joplan's people, and this video was quickly thrown together as a demo to see if they were interested in doing a project together:
