It’s hard to find words to describe this journey and where it’s brought us, but God never ceases to amaze me.
Every year our youth group goes on a missions trip to Mexico over spring break, but this year was unlike any other. We crossed paths with a group of people known as The Forgotten, who were social outcasts, forced to make shelter out of cardboard boxes, scrap metal, and someone else’s trash and waste. These people had been shunned from their families, forced into exile, and barely have enough food to get by. I remember Matt telling me that I was going to see things unlike anything I had ever seen before, that it was a horrible and shocking sight. I didn’t believe him. But as I walked amongst the broken glass, the used diapers, and beer bottles, something in me snapped. I walked back to the car in sobs, blaming my tears on the dust in my eyes. Everything changed after that moment. I felt such sorrow for these people, such a deep connection with that place, it was almost like I was feeling their pain. That night, over tacos, Matt and I talked about the day, and God laid it on our hearts to write a song about this experience. A song for and about these people. A song that expresses how deeply we both felt about that moment. Three days later, God had given us the vision, the words, the music, and the talent to make this project possible.
All of the music, lyrics, and talent on this song is done completely by youth at Living Water Church. And the song is filled with personal memories of each person who went on the trip.
This song started in a dump in the middle of nowhere, and God has been using to reach all kinds of hearts in all kinds of situations. And at the end of the day, each one of us is special, and unique and absolutely unforgettable in the eyes of God. Our hearts will forever remember the faces of those people, the same way that God will always remember ours. Beneath the sunset, we are one.
I FINALLY got a chance to scoop one of the CD's up @ church today. You guys all did a SUPER DOPE job on this project. I'm really proud to call you all friends. God Bless.
