THE FIRST HARVEST CELEBRATION
Photobucket
In 1621, the Plymouth colonists and Wampanoag Indians shared an autumn harvest feast which lasted for three days, it is acknowledged today as one of the first Thanksgiving celebrations in the colonies. This harvest meal has become a symbol of cooperation and interaction between English colonists and Native Americans. The legacy of thanks, and particularly of the feast, have survived the centuries as people throughout the United States gather family, friends and food for their yearly Thanksgiving meal.

THE REAL MENU

The most detailed description of the "First Thanksgiving" is from Edward Winslow from "A Journal of the Pilgrims at Plymouth", in 1621: "Our harvest being gotten in, our governor sent four men on fowling, that so we might after a special manner rejoice together after we had gathered the fruit of our labors. They four in one day killed as much fowl as, with a little help beside, served the company almost a week. At which time, among other recreations, we exercised our arms, many of the Indians coming amongst us, and among the rest their greatest king Massasoit, with some ninety men, whom for three days we entertained and feasted, and they went out and killed five deer, which they brought to the plantation and bestowed upon our governor, and upon the captain, and others. And although it be not always so plentiful as it was at this time with us, yet by the goodness of God, we are so far from want that we often wish you partakers of our plenty."

,

Following is a list of the foods that were available to the colonists at the time of the 1621 feast. Seafood: Bluefish, Codfish, Eel, Clams, Oysters, and Lobster Wild Fowl: Wild Turkey, Goose, Duck, Crane, Swan, Partridge, and Eagles Meat: Venison and Seal. Grain: Wheat Flour and Indian Corn. Vegetables: Pumpkin, Peas, Beans, Onions, Lettuce, Radishes, and Carrots. Fruit: Cranberry’s, Plums, Blueberry’s, and Concord Grapes. Nuts: Walnuts, Chestnuts, and Acorns. Herbs and Seasonings: People tend to think of English food at bland, but, in fact, the pilgrims used many spices, including cinnamon, ginger, nutmeg, pepper, and dried fruit, in sauces for meats.

THANKSGIVING
Photobucket

Sarah Josepha Hale, the enormously influential magazine editor and author who waged a tireless campaign to make Thanksgiving a national holiday in the mid-19th century. So in the middle of the American Civil War, President Abraham Lincoln, proclaimed a national Thanksgiving Day, to be celebrated on the final Thursday in November 1863.

"In testimony whereof, I have hereunto set my hand, and caused the seal of the United States to be affixed. Done at the city of Washington, this third day of October, in the year of our Lord one thousand eight hundred and sixty-three, and of the independence of the United States"

Proclamation of President Abraham Lincoln, October 3, 1863

TRADITIONAL CELEBRATION AND FOODS
Photobucket

In current times certain kinds of food are traditionally served at Thanksgiving meals. Firstly, baked or roasted turkey is usually the featured item on any Thanksgiving feast table (so much so that Thanksgiving is sometimes referred to as "Turkey Day"). Stuffing, mashed potatoes with gravy, sweet potatoes, cranberry sauce, sweet corn, other fall vegetables, and pumpkin pie are commonly associated with Thanksgiving dinner. All of these are actually native to the Americas or were introduced as a new food source to the Europeans when they arrived. .

Welcome new and old friends

Some of you remember when my page was "Chef in a Box" doing pages on different Chef's along with a small bio on them. About a year into it I morphed to Verb in a Box, feeling the need to change subjects each month or so. Since I have began with MS I have gone back to College and am currently taking Web Design classes; this being for my own growth and personal enjoyment. I am a bit of a watercolorists and amateur photographer and currently I'm learning to use all the wonderful software programs available to me in a very artistic way...
And as usual this page is lovingly dedicated to my late Mom who was a Chef.

Many Blessing's

Our hearts are heavy with the passing of our sweet cousin AnnaBelle, who crossed over to the Rainbow Bridge yesterday.

She is the kitty sister to Izzy, Ollie and Dickens (Cat Lady and da Twisted Whiskers).  If you get a moment, please pass by their page and send your tender condolences.

    Beauty is Strength.
Strength to face the deepest of fears.
Strength to continue the journey in spite of all burdens.
Strength to stand in the face of all adversity,
Even when the obstacles are loved ones.

    Beauty is Wisdom.
    Wisdom to accept all failings.
Wisdom to admit failure and short-coming.
Wisdom to keep wits in order,
Even when panic struggles to reign.

    Beauty is Endurance.
Endurance to rise after every fall.
Endurance to fight even though all seems hopeless and lost.
Endurance to live by true ideals
Even when that risks costing everything.

    Beauty is Compassion.
Compassion to show mercy for all.
Compassion to provide a free shoulder and ear.
Compassion to love all as family,
Even when they are the worst of enemies.

    Real beauty is lost forever,
    When measured in perfection.

    Zav!

    'TWAS THE NIGHT OF THANKSGIVING

Twas the night of Thanksgiving, but I just couldn't sleep.
I tried counting backwards, I tried counting sheep.
The leftovers beckoned--the dark meat and white,
but I fought the temptation with all of my might.
    Tossing and turning with anticipation,
the thought of a snack became infatuation.
So, I raced to the kitchen, flung open the door
and gazed at the fridge, full of goodies galore.
I gobbled up turkey and buttered potatoes,
pickles and carrots, beans and tomatoes.
I felt myself swelling so plump and so round,
till all of a sudden, I rose off the ground.
I crashed through the ceiling, floating into the sky
With a mouthful of pudding and a handful of pie.
But, I managed to yell as I soared past the trees.......
happy eating to all---pass the cranberries, please!
