San Antonio musician Liza Ybarra's first break came in 2000, when she was cast as Suzette Quintanilla in the Off-Broadway musical, "Selena Forever", which played in a string of American cities that year. Her second break came several years later, when she joined forces with a local shopkeeper, Saul Barbosa, who dreamed of starting a record company. The result: Ybarra's debut album, "Anoche Soñé", just released on Barbosa's Stars Above Texas Music label.

And what an album it is. The disc includes a wider variety of musical accompaniments than the typical Tejano album, ranging from Reggae- and Hip Hop-flavored cumbias to Old School rancheras and R&B en Español, with a little Mariachi mixed in for flavor. Ybarra shines on the radio-friendly "Tu Dijístes" and "Aquí Estaré Para Siempre", but die-hard Tejano fans will most appreciate "Jamás Volveré", which will inspire gritos anywhere beer and tequila are served. The disc's biggest surprise, however, is the Rock en Español sparkler, "Adiós", which falls somewhere between Selena's "Ya No" and Kelly Clarkson's "Since U Been Gone".

The disc reflects some of the limitations of a debut album on an upstart indie label, but Ybarra's rootsy voice and obvious songwriting talents save the day, making for one of the most pleasing recent releases in the Tejano genre.
