Lizh just is. That’s the answer you’re likely to get from the genre-hopping singer/songwriter when asked to define herself. Lizh’s style has a Neo-Soul twist that is flavored by her occasional Reggaeton fusions, decorated by congero Preston Barnes' eclectic rhythms. Additionally, she inserts Spoken Word stanzas that bounce off of drummer Eric Kelly and bassist Scott Volthause’s syncopated rhythms, teetering on the edge of Hip Hop. Truly, there is no genre that Lizh and her crew won’t venture, but Lizh’s unique songwriting and powerhouse vocals make the diverse style cohesive.
Being a first generation Dominican-American and native New Yorker explains Lizh’s eclectic sound. She lived in NYC until the age of twenty two. There she honed her skills by working as a hired voice for studio and live performances, ranging from singing parody songs in Spanish for radio, to sharing the stage with the likes of Timothy Dark. By the time she moved to Raleigh, NC, Lizh was ready to hit the stage with her own material.
Her upcoming debut album, “Let’s break it down”, is to be released in 2010. The album’s theme circles around crossing new boundaries and freeing yourself from conventional restraints. She places emphasis on the relationships between people and the world they create for one another, both one-on-one and as a community. With songs about soul searching, finding new love and realizing that some people will never change, “Let’s break it down” aims towards empowering the listener to find strength in who they are.
In the Triangle, Lizh has been featured at the Mansion 462 in Chapel Hill, The Hayti Heritage Center in Durham and in the Pour House for Raleigh’s Spark Con 2008. She's also partaken in events such as ArtLifeStyle, Carrboro's West End Poetry Weekend, Durham Be Easy, Lady Soul – A tribute to Aretha Franklin and PoetrySPARK 2009. In summer of 2009, Lizh had her “15 minutes” with Paul Wyss on WCOM 103.5 in Carrboro.
Lizh and her songs are also a part of the Black Poetry Theatre Company. She is featured in the company’s primary production where six lives are expressed through spoken word, dance and song, “Black Poetry”. Since Lizh has joined the company, the show has been featured in Manbites Dog Theatre in Durham and Wayne State University in Detroit.
Now twenty-four, with bandmates who continually nurture her chameleon tendencies, Lizh steps onto every stage with her instruments in hand and her eyes forward.
Hey LizH-you and the band were great Wednesday. My wife and I really enjoyed your performance. I'm even more excited to be working with you. Talk to you soon.

Good morning Lizh. Thank you very much for the featured set at Marcom's last night. What can I say that I haven't told you already? You know I love your music. I think I've told you that a million times already. hehe. But I also love your spirit and you as a person. My daughters were there last night because they wanted to see YOU. And they never come to the shows! haha. You know what they did when we got home last night? They picked up their instruments and started working on a song they wrote recently. We were up until 4am last night! See what you've done? You inspire them. You inspired everybody last night with your music and your vibe! Please extend my thanks to Scott, Eric, and Preston for playing last night. You all sounded fantastic. Thanks again and have a wonderful weekend sweetie!
Sorry to hear that - hope it was a decision for the betterment of your well being as well as for your former partner... Looking forward to seeing you perform soon !
