Lindsey Goodman has been described as a “legitimate virtuoso” who performs with “agility and emotion” (Pittsburgh Post-Gazette) and “impressive artistry”. An avid performer of new music, “flutist Lindsey Goodman appears to know no fear in tackling the most demanding music” (Pittsburgh Tribune-Review). Lindsey is an active commissioner of new works and has given over forty world premieres, including twelve solo and chamber pieces composed especially for her.
Goodman is in her eighth season as the solo flutist of the Pittsburgh New Music Ensemble, a group with whom she has recorded two CDs, made two international tours, and been featured seven times as a soloist. Ms. Goodman's solo recording debut of Russell Pinkston's "Lizamander" for flute and MAX/MSP is featured on PNME's 2009 release "Against the Emptiness", available on the New Dynamic Records label. Additionally, Lindsey has performed as a guest soloist at the June in Buffalo composer's festival, in the Miller Theatre (NYC) with the new music band Alarm Will Sound, and as a flutist/actress at the Edinburgh Fringe Festival (UK). She also performs regularly throughout the United States and Canada in various chamber and solo settings with a special emphasis on music of emerging American composers and music for flute and mutli-media. Lindsey is also a member of the inter-disciplinary company Now Here This.
As an orchestral musician, Goodman holds the Martha Gaines Wehrle Chair in her third season as principal flutist of the West Virginia Symphony Orchestra and can be heard on that ensemble's first-ever CD release. Lindsey also frequently performs with the Toledo and Lima (OH) Symphony Orchestras, the Fort Wayne (IN), Erie (PA), and Tuscarawas (OH) Philharmonics, and the Ohio Valley Symphony and has performed with the New World Symphony (FL). Lindsey also maintains an active teaching studio of flutists grades six through twelve outside Columbus, Ohio. Her students have won regional soloist competitions and been principal players in all-state, regional, and county honor bands and orchestras, in addition to participating in state-adjudicated solo and ensemble performances and holding principal and leadership positions in their school ensembles.
During the 2009 - 2010 season, Lindsey eagerly anticipates collaborating with pianist and composer Anthony Coleman on the Music on the Edge/Sound Series at the Andy Warhol Museum in Pittsburgh, performing as a guest artist with the Montclaire String Quartet on their season in Charleston, West Virginia, recording Mathew Rosenblum's "Under the Rainbow" for solo flute, alto flute, and piccolo with tape for an upcoming CD release of the composer's chamber works, and performing recitals of flute and tape repertoire and teaching masterclasses at the University of Akron (OH) and Frostburg State University (MD)).
A student of New York Philharmonic principal flutist Robert Langevin, Goodman also studied with Walfrid Kujala, former principal piccolo of the Chicago Symphony Orchestra. She received her masters degree from Northwestern University, her bachelors degree summa cum laude from Duquesne University, and a professional studies diploma from the Manhattan School of Music’s orchestral performance program. Raised in Ohio, Lindsey resides outside Columbus with her husband, percussionist and educator Chris Carmean, and their dog Jack.
