Llewellyn Westerman was born on the island of Nevis in the British Leeward Islands. He first came to St. Croix aboard the cargo ship The New Idea, then a second time aboard Endeavor. He did not have to pay fare, because, as he explains, "...they knew me from around the water." He has lived in St. Croix ever since, sailing and performing Calpyso.
When Charis, his Dick Newick Trimaran of 20 years, was irreparably damaged in Hurricane Lenny in 1999, he went to work with longtime friend and engineer Moose Silver designing and building a magnificent Trimaran from the ground up. Charis+ now graces the waters of St. Croix, Buck Island, and many other surrounding islands.
Llewellyn has spent as many years sailing as he has spent singing. Passengers on his boat will often be treated to a song belted out into the ocean air, and he performs with guitar Saturdays at Cheeseburgers in Paradise. Llewellyn is part of a rich tradition of Calypsonians, who compete at Carnival before judges.
