Lloyd has a broad range of influences, ranging from the old time musicians of North Carolina to the acts at the Walnut Valley Festival in Winfield Kansas to the crazy hippies at the Bonnaroo Festival in Manchester Tennessee. His early musical infueces were his mom and a great fiddler by the name of Bill Thurman. He later picked up many styles and techniques from the renowned dulcimer player Steve Seifert. Lloyd has a large and strange range of music that he listens to and he tries to incorporate and draw from all of his favorite artists. Those include Jack Johnson, John Doyle, Ailleen and Elkin Thomas, Laura Boosinger, Carl Jones, Jimi Hendrix, G. Love, Laura Boosinger, Andrew Bird, Wayne Henderson, Gary Gallier...the list goes on and on.
Lloyd started playing music in the summer of 94 when his family bought a mountain dulcimer in Mountainview, Arkansas. They brought it home and fought over it for a few months. He recieved his first dulcimer as a Christmas present that year. Then he got a new instrument every year after that for a few years. 95 was the year of the guitar, 96 was the year of the banjo and 97 was the year of the mandolin. He started entering dulcimer contests early on and won the Texas Championship in 1998 and the National Champioship in 2000. In 2000 Lloyd graduated from high school and packed his bags and moved to Nashville. He lived their with his friend and fellow dulcimer player Steve Seifert. Lloyd's solo CD "Northfield" was recorded in 2000 also. He overdubbed and played every instrument on the album to sound like a one man band. Before he moved back to his home in Houston he and Steve recorded an album called "Duets" in wich it is all two dulcimers. In 2003 he began playing with Frank Miller an accomplished guitar player in Houston. His mom Margaret played bass and by 2005 "Crossong the Line" was released. Along with a recording artist he is an accomplished performer and teacher, appering at music festivals across the country. He is now based out of Kennard, Texas.
Hi. Thanks for all the workshops at Winter Festival of Acoustic Music. I really enjoyed your style of teaching and think your workshops are equal in enjoyment and value as those I've had the pleasure of taking from Stephen Seifert at past Winter Fests. Thanks! -Jim
Hey Lloyd..how ya doing? Congratulations on your engagement...that's great!! We were in Texas during Christmas, but no music this year..as my grandmother was sick and we moved her from the hospital to a nursing home on Christmas Eve. How is all of your family? I'm still playing music and set to graduate in Dec. '08. Please tell everyone hello for me
Hey there! Stephen told me he and his fam are coming up to visit sometime in February. Are yall going up to Winterfest in Irving? I'll be coming down, and Carole might too. I'm really psyched 'cause No Strings Attached is going to be there. :o) Hope all is well! Give me a call sometime, boy!
Hey man! I hear there's some big news on your end! Anyways man I had to replace my phone a week or two ago and don't have your number anymore. Some friends and I might be camping up in Sam Houston State Park next weekend if you aren't doing anything. Holla back Lloydie.
Hey there! Judging from the comments on both April's and your boards, I'd say congratulations are in order! I'll be seeing yall next week -- I'm flying into Houston Thursday night, and Stephen (and possibly Joshua) Bailey will be driving me up to Kennard Friday morning. Until then, take care!
*Big Ole Grin* We got to see your family in Bennington (minus you, of course.) Jim enjoyed the jamming, but I liked receiving ALL the news (music vs musicians, you know). When I heard about your recent engagement, I could hardly wait to get home to say CONGRATULATIONS! As you know, you and April have been in my prayers and will continue to be as you blend your lives into one. You are one special fella, Lloyd. I love you.
Congratulations!!! I am so happy for the both of you! I wish only the best for you guys because you both deserve it. As a bestfriend it's really great knowing your bestfriend will always be loved and taken care of. CAN'T WAIT!!
