Leukemia & Lymphoma Society - Michigan Chapter's Blurbs
About me: The Leukemia & Lymphoma Society (LLS) is the world's largest voluntary health organization dedicated to funding blood cancer research, education and patient services. The mission of LLS is to cure leukemia, lymphoma, Hodgkin's disease and myeloma, and improve the quality of life of patients and their families.
Here are some statistics you should keep in mind:
Approximately 894,000 Americans are living with blood cancers.
In 2008, it is estimated that someone will be diagnosed with a blood cancer every four minutes. Someone will succumb to these terrible diseases every 10 minutes.
Leukemia causes more deaths than any other cancer among children and young adults under the age of 20. Lymphomas, on the other hand, are the most common blood cancers and account for nearly 54 percent of all cases.
Since its founding in 1949, the Society has invested more than $600 million towards research for leukemia, lymphoma, Hodgkin’s disease and myeloma.
The Society funds seven blood cancer researchers in Michigan: five at the University of Michigan and two at Children’s Hospital.
