LIP SERVICE
is Charlotte North Carolina’s only Pure Poetry Open Mic catering to the LGBT artist. Produced and hosted by L. Monique, the venue is LGBT affirming yet welcoming to all artists and visitors. Currently on hiatus the monthly venue provides artists of all sexual orientations and experience levels to share their work in a supportive mature environment where the work can be heard and their experiences can be validated.
This is important to us, because all too often venues pimp poets by using them as opening acts for parties and other entertainers with little respect for the art of spoken word or the experiences which bring life to their poems. Lip Service is not that venue. If you’re a true poetry head or budding LGBT artist, this is the place for you to nourish your creative side while being exposed to some of the hottest poets on the planet, because that’s who Lip Service features. The crowd is warm, supportive and always enthusiastic. In months passed, talented folks like Theresa Davis (Atlanta, GA), Danielle Jasmine “Ms D” (Newburgh, NY) have kissed the mic in a way that leaves indelible literary hickies you’ll never want to cover with a turtle neck. For National Poetry Month Lip Service presented a special double header from Brooklyn New York. Tanta-Zawadi & Nathan P who undoubtedly scorched the mic with a passion many want to imitate and few can duplicate.

Sounds Like
Poetry - Feels like labor pains......lots of heavy breathing and proper positioning - Looks like.............the birth of a new poem is on the horizon so it must be time to start the celebration.....concluding with the naming ritual and offering to the Supreme Creator - "Beholding the one thing greater than itself."

WHO IS L. MONIQUE? (The face behind the lips-aims to take poetry to the next level)
_____________________________________________________________________________
The producer and host of Lip Service is a soulful and spirited individual who uses poetry like most folks do oxygen. With each breath she (and her behind the scenes partner Toii King) have exhaled some fantabulous creations. Yup, that’s a word......though Webster’s Dictionary hasn’t’ listed it yet - we’re sure Wikipedia will soon.
Many folks who know of L. Monique know her through Smokin Spoken Wordz Productions. SSW Productions was the diverse NY (tri-state area) Poetry Collective which served as a vehicle to edutain mass audiences with a collection of artists and events to be reckoned with. Since L. Monique & Toii’s recent relocation to Charlotte NC, Smokin’ Spoken Wordz Production has been on hiatus with Lip Service and other ventures now in the forefront.

HOW SHE DOES HER THANG?
______________________________________________________________________________
If L. Monique is involved, lyrical mastery is always at work. She’s opened for performers like singer Crystal Waters and The NY Kings of Comedy. L. Monique has graced the stages of such New York notable venues as Nuyorican Poets Café, and The Brooklyn Moon Café. As an independent artist, L. Monique continues to participate within the literary arena as a Performer at Public and Private events, a Slam Participant, Venue Host, Workshop Facilitator and Community Activist. She believes that as a Spoken Word Artist, it’s her job to edutain others by often being the ‘Voice of the Voiceless’ - empowering those who might otherwise be overlooked and bringing attention to issues that might otherwise go unaddressed. She continues to do this from page to stage via performances, 3 self published volumes of poetry, numerous publishing credits in local newspapers, periodicals, ezines and website and lastly but certainly not least, her CD Solstice (released late 2006).
L. Monique writes in multiple genres which encompass hard hitting themes like Womyn’s Rights & Empowerment, Prisoner’s Issues, AIDS Awarness, LGBT themes and more. Her poetic style cannot easily be categorized. It is however, impassioned, inspiring and thought provoking. Which is just the way she likes it because no matter what you say after witnessing one of her performances, if you’re ‘saying’ anything at all, she’s done her job of getting you to feel. For more ‘feelings’ and to keep yourself ‘in the know’ visit this page or her Electronic Press Kits (www.SonicBids.com/lmonique) for updates on the latest happenings.

Hi L. Monique, We sure are missing your amazing words in NY. Thanks for joining me for those Trailer Talks at the Juneteenth Celebration and the NACL Theatre Festival in the Sullivan County Catskills. Trailer Talk is going to hit the road looking for Liberty next year. Perhaps a TT in your new hometown. Safe travels, Sabrina
