Music Connection Magazine Review- The Derby, Feb 23:
With a musical style somewhere between Kansas and Rush, the group Lobate Scarp presents prog rock that hits you right between the eyes. This band's rich melodies flow naturally like a stream, while the songs are broken down into movements much like a symphony, allowing for a smooth set.
Sears' vocals are as powerful as Kerry Livgren's while the music sustains a high level of sophistication. Woods' cello adds a nice dimension between the guitar and the bass. Catt shows dexterity as he shuffles between a four-string, five-string and stand-up bass, sometimes using all three instruments in the same song. Binder's riffs at the end of the first song shine, as do Catt's bass grooves on the last song of the set.
Lobate Scarp exploded on stage and took the audience on a musical journey through progressive rock, as they combined elements of classical music with a rock beat. The second song of the set was based on the movie Jacob's Ladder. The third song was dark and moody, with rough vocals that fit the music perfectly. The fourth song was the most commercial and upbeat. The fifth and final song was pure rock, in the style of Rush, complex and moving with multi-layered textures that provided a strong and fitting end to a too-short set of smart music for audiophiles.
Lobate Scarp has a promising future in the prog rock market delivering music that brings back the days when songs had a message with lyrics that complemented, not dominated, the track. Indeed, Lobate Scarp's musical approach deserves industry support and interest.
