The Locksmiths are comprised of Cozmos and Tony Mantis. Cozmos brings an ecclectic collection of beats, sounds, samples, cuts and scratches to the table, while Mantis provides a raw, introspective look at himself, hip hop, and the many situations life can throw at you, by way of unique flows and delivery.
The two met about seven years back at the New England Institute of Art, where Cozmos was studying audio production. Mantis came down to record some tracks with his long time friend Myster DL. DL and Coz had been messing around with some beats together, thus, Coz was in the studio that day. Mantis was amazed at the way Cozmos had laced some samples on a track and in the process was inspired to drop a verse that to this day Cozmos thinks is his hottest verse (though Tony disagrees).
Later, Cozmos did some production for Tony's group Surreal (Mantis & Chris Sinn with DJ RNDM). After that project fell apart, the two hooked up and realized that they had some real chemistry musically.
So, after many late, drunk, high, and extremely bootleg sessions in basements and closet vocal booths, they decided to hit the pawn shop, dig in the couch cushions, and Tony sold one of his kidneys to get some real studio time.
They released their debut, self titled album in August of 2006 on their independantly owned Pawn Shop Entertainment and have been playing shows all over New England in support. They have shared the stage with many national touring acts coming through Boston, including Glue, Blackalicious, DJ Z-Trip, Aceyalone, Louis Logic, Shootyz Groove, Kool Keith, Awol One, Josh Martinez, Badfish and Mickey Avalon. They have also had the pleasure of sharing the stage with many talented local cats such as The Jelley Fund, Electric Donkey, J. Sinn, Nabo Rawk, Gnotes, Elemental Zazen, Ricky Mortis, D-Tension and Effect (Los Wunder Twins), Project Move, Greedy Irish, Madness 2012, Left Over Wine, Defcon, Soular Prominence, The Indefinate Article, Melodesiac and many more.
Their newest release, SKELETON KEYS, was released to the public on 4/20 of this year. It includes 13 completely new tracks that push the limits of hip hop as far as they will stretch, and then break them to go even further.
