UPCOMING EVENTS:
"AMERICAN GRAFFITI" with Vintage Hot Rod Show!
Saturday, July 11th at 10:00 a.m.
Admission: $6.00 general; $4.75 Loft members
Jump into your candy-colored custom or your screaming machine and cruise over to The Loft for a special souped-up screening of AMERICAN GRAFFITI, George Lucas' classic ode to cool cars, wild times and hot summer nights, featuring a totally boss collection of vintage American hot rods in the Loft parking lot, courtesy of The Tucson Street Rod Association! Be there or be square.
"Where were you in '62?"
Before he blasted off into a galaxy far, far away, George Lucas directed this semi-autobiographical comedy/drama detailing the hook-ups, hijinks and hell-raising of a group of California teens on the last night of summer, 1962. Cruising the strip in their cherry hot rods, drag racing at dawn, pranking the police, hanging out at the school dance, finding first love and searching for that mysterious blond in the white t-bird, the kids bop their way through what was later called "America's last age of innocence," before the whole world seemed to turn upside down.
Perhaps better than any other film, AMERICAN GRAFFITI captures the look, feel, and sound of that era, both through its attention to detail in cars, clothes and characters (inspired by Lucas' own teenage days a hot-rod cruiser in Southern California), and its wall-to-wall soundtrack of 1950s pop music (propelled by Wolfman Jack's rock & roll radio show) that would become as popular as the film itself. As Lucas interweaves several character subplots, AMERICAN GRAFFITI becomes a flawless time capsule of meticulously re-created memory, as authentic as a documentary and vividly realized through innovative use of cinematography and sound.
The once-in-a-lifetime ensemble cast inhabits their roles so fully that they don't seem like actors at all, comprising a veritable who's who of '70s performers--some of whom went on to stellar careers--including Ron Howard, Richard Dreyfuss, Harrison Ford, Cindy Williams, Mackenzie Phillips, Charles Martin Smith, Suzanne Somers, Candy Clark, and Paul Le Mat.
THE SILVER SCREEN SLAM : MOVIE IMPROV DEATH MATCH EDITION!
Wednesday, July 15th at 7:00 p.m.
Admission: $5.00
Film and poetry face off, Slam-style, when THE SILVER SCREEN SLAM returns to The Loft, this time in a special MOVIE IMPROV DEATH MATCH EDITION! Featuring performances by the 2009 Tucson Slam Team, movie trivia, an open-mic Slam competition (with a $100 cash prize), and the soon-to-be-infamous Movie Improv Death Match!
It's the return of THE SILVER SCREEN SLAM, this time in a brand-spanking-new MOVIE IMPROV DEATH MATCH EDITION! Bring your best poetry performance pieces, fine-tune your improvisational skills and battle it out with other cinema-loving slam-sters in hopes of snagging the coveted Slammie Award and a $100 cash prize! We'll warm things up with a little Slam-style Movie Trivia, so start Netflixing now! Then you'll thrill to the sight of Tucson poets being thrown into the dreaded MOVIE IMPROV DEATH MATCH, where they'll be forced to improvise their best haiku-style pieces inspired by random movie clips we'll project onto the screen (admit it ... you've ALWAYS been inspired by Dirty Dancing), with the audience deciding the winner of each two-person Death Match! The survivors will then move on to a straight Slam round, where the audience will once again decide the poets' fate and select who lives or dies (metaphorically speaking, of course). The last poet standing will take home the $100 cash prize and the Slammie Award. But that’s not all … you'll also enjoy a Feature Performance by the talented members of the 2009 Tucson Slam Team (Doc Luben, Lindsay Miller, Mickey Randleman, Maya Asher and Laura Lacanette), in one of their final Tucson appearances before leaving for the National Poetry Slam in West Palm Beach, Florida! The $5.00 admission to The Silver Screen Slam will help raise much-needed funds to send the Tucson Slam Team to compete in sunny Florida … so don’t be shy about donating a little extra cash in order to help our team bring Slam victory to the Tucson poetry scene!
