On paper, they are the sum of three seemingly disparate parts: a psychologist, a teacher, and an insurance underwriter. But those who have heard Chicago's Log Nesto would agree that as a band, what they have to say is worth hearing. You'll find no leather pants or stage shades here. They're not a power trio intent on annihilating your eardrums with linear dynamics or sheets of sound (guitarist Jim Liggett's amplifier would fit nicely into the overhead bin of any commercial airliner). No, Log Nesto is a refreshing band with a refreshing goal: to scratch an itch. Their songs don't ruminate on long lost love or flipping-off the institution. Rather, they focus on the simple existential woes of boredom, responsibility, and marking time in the 21st century. Sound draining? It isn't. In fact, the tunes are remarkably loose and listenable. One need not look further than their ambitious debut As the Day is Long (Poking Thud, 0001A) to see what I mean. Recorded at Chicago's famed SOMA Electronic Music Studio under the watchful eye of crack engineer Tim Iseler (Wilco, The Sea & Cake, Teenage Fanclub), the band has released a record that won't soon stray from your stereo. Their vocals are charmingly imperfect: not hesitant or off key, but honest and unapologetic. Bassist Dan Kalnes's sympathetic structural underpinnings fit hand-in-glove with drummer John Toth's compositional style that's as nimble as it is heavy-handed. Liggett's angular melodicism and chordal accompaniment provides the harmonic backdrop for tunes that draw equally upon rock, jazz, and singer/songwriter influences. Sound interesting? It is. {Thermos Andrew, Spring 2008}
DAn I dont think I ever told you this, but you guys are good as fuck. I love "Over It", and "Fall on your Feet" its cathy as hell I had it in my head all day at work last week. I've been jamming to you guys. So you do most of the singing? It sounds like it, but I was not 100% sure. Much love. I would have came to the show man but I had to register for IU. I have a fake so Ill for sure come to the next one. Youre gonna have to give me your number becasue I lost my phone. Peace.
I will alert some of my Chicago peeps to the news of the gig. Have fun, I hope it goes well.
If for some reason a bong is being raffled off at the show and you want me to pass out on someone's toilet, I'll try to catch a last second flight up there.
It would be so fitting if I could make it to the second first show at Abbey Pub. Maybe I could flip the tape again. Good luck Rev! Wish CO wasn't so far away...
