The Lohan School of Shaolin specializes in the traditional and spiritual forms of Northern Shaolin, Tai Chi Praying Mantis, Seven Star Praying Mantis, Eighteen Classical Weapons, Traditional Lion Dancing, Five Animals / Five Family forms of Southern Fist, Internal Chi Gung and Tai Chi Ch'uan of the Yang and Chen families.

Lohan School of Shaolin History

From it’s humble beginnings in 1994, with just a handful of students practicing on the street fronting Sifu Steve’s home, to various halls in churches and dance studios, to China town Plaza and finally to it’s current site in China Town, it can be said that the Lohan School has come a long way.
Today, there is a respectable number of students, both at the school and in their community outreach programs. The students perform at many community events, casinos and convention functions, and private parties not only to promote the Chinese culture, but also to fund raise for the school which are incentives for them. From one Chinese lion, they can now perform with as many as 7 lions, a 63′ dragon, several drums, and an array of flags, banners and weapons. The school has also developed several senior instructors who teach not only at the school, but also in the various athletic, recreation and community centers.
Besides the regular classes, the school has held several workshops and seminars with visiting Buddhist Priests, Tao Masters, Martial Arts Masters and Spiritual healers. They’ve also participated in martial events, not only in Las Vegas, but also in Mexico and California. The recently held a Tai Chi retreat in Maui, Hawaii, and plan to do many more in the future.
The school also offers special classes in spiritual and herbal healing, and combines different cultural teachings through music and dance classes.

Northern Shaolin History
The History of Northern Shaolin Kung Fu dates back to the year 495 A.D., when the Shaolin Buddhist Monastery was built in Honan province in Northern China honoring the buddhist monk who brought Buddhism to China. The Monk’s name was Badra. In order to defend the temple from attack, the monks developed a martial art system known as Ch’uan (Fist Method). Ch’uan Fa combined Buddhist meditative practices with self defense techniques.
Northern Shaolin Kung Fu emphasizes extension in striking, with deep stances and dynamic kicking methods. The northern styles develop flexibility, strength, coordination, balance, and agility. The Theory of Northern Shaolin is that power is developed through the rigorous training of extended postures, which could be condensed into shorter strikes when used in fighting. Northern training also instills a great amount of versatility in movement and technique.
At the Lohan School we teach the traditional Northern style of Shaolin. This is the largest of the northern lineages taught today, and is taught in a systematic fashion.

Our Goals
1.To be concerned with the revival of the original concepts of Shaolin Kung Fu and Tai Chi Ch’uan.
2.To demonstrate that these concepts are applicable in the modern world.
3.To ensure Tai Chi Ch’uan and Shaolin Kung Fu have been a place in history and in modern society.
4. To maintain the spirit of rediscovery and reawakening of ideas, ideals, and natural principals.
5. To offer an alternative way of life, without drugs, medications, or artificial stimulations.
4. To educate others to be healthy and fit, and to be in touch with themselves, others, and the environment.
5. The state of the art should be maintained, developed, perpetuated and shared with those who seek health and fitness naturally and hollistically.

What is a Lohan (Luohan)?

“….those who overcome their enemies”

In any language…Lohan in Chinese, Arahat in Sanskrit-India, Rankan in Japanese, Dgra Bcom Pa in Tibetan…they are all referring to the same people.

The Arahats (lohans) of India

The traditional Arahats of India were he disciples of the Guatama Buddha (Prince Siddhartha, 6th Century B.C. India). There were originally 16 Arahats (Later 2 more were added) who each had hundreds of second level disciples who were also Arahats. Their fundamental goals were to spread the teachings of Buddhism. Arahats are those who have attained a successful level of personal development through self observation and self cultivation. Traditional Arahats came from many backgrounds in life, including monks, military leaders and royal families. Arahats are detached from worldly matters, yet can function very well within society in any activity at anytime. Each Arahat is known to have supernatural abilities (powers) used for the benefit of Humanity.

Martial Arts, Lohans of China

The Traditional Lohans of China were Martial Artists who trained outside the Shaolin Temples, starting approximately during the 3rd Century A.D. Traditionally the Shaolin Martial arts were reserved for the monks inside the temples. Due to various circumstances, these martial arts spread outside the temple walls to non-Buddhists. These Lohans were partially responsible for the hundreds of styles of Kung Fu seen today

The Chinese Martial Art, Lohan or “outsider” are devoted to the martial arts codes of conduct such as righteousness, benevolence, kindness and justice. These codes grew from the compassionate Buddhists teachings from India, the Taoist Spiritual Teachings of China and from the philosophy / codes of conduct of Confucius. These martial artists became the forerunners of the “Wandering Knights of China”. Which have been made popular in the movies of today. Typically they are depicted as heroes who help the weak, suppress evil and who use all the martial arts and spiritual abilities for the benefit of Humanity

Sifu's Teachings

What I have come forward today to do is something I dread not because of the crowd that faces me, but because of the weight that it bears to me personally. To give definition to what being a Lohan in Las Vegas has meant to me is a difficult task, and to describe what Sifu has done is equally so. Our teacher, and I say ‘our’ because I came here as part of an entity and not as a singular individual, taught us about hardship because he knew it from the environment in which he grew. He was fortunate enough to be accepted by the Chinese community, and it is that acceptance which has now given so many others the opportunity to blossom in the way that he has. I. Sifu has given me a sense of purpose and definition in my life. A. Integrity has always been very important to me. 1. Sifu has done his best to foster this sense of justice. 2. It is vital, as everyone knows, for a martial artist to understand not just ‘right’ and ‘wrong’, but that they are not always clearly defined. B. Kung-Fu has given me an outlet to help prove that justice still has a place in the world. 1. Sifu’s experience adds an element to this kind of observation. 2. The fusion of spirituality and martial arts in Sifu’s teachings allows me to examine the motivations of other people’s actions. 3. In doing so Sifu has shown that Kung-Fu is not just a study of motion physically, but also the constant motion between people socially and emotionally. 4. In the eyes of many, a man who steals bread is a criminal, but to his starving children he is a hero. At what point are we rightfully in a place to judge others? II. Companionship is one the greatest things that I have pulled from Sifu’s teachings. A. The camaraderie at the school is a palpable sense. 1. At the school I was able to find individuals who shared the same kind of mental template as I did. 2. These were people who were not necessarily from the same culture, religion, or background as I was, but they shared the same sense of being and righteousness. 3. Through acceptance I have then been able to find the same shared qualities in others where I thought it previously did not exist, and in turn learn about those qualities that others have searched for in people for years as well. 4. Patience and tolerance were integral parts of this process. B. A great deal of the emphasis in Kung-Fu is on personal strength, but Sifu showed his students at the school this, that “Lohans alone are separate and strong, but together we are invincible”. It seems curious, in the face of such a myriad of gifts and talents that only a few could be chosen. But it is, perhaps, that sense of justice fostered in me by Sifu that drove me to come here and to display my talent not just as an exhibition but as an opportunity to teach. If the worst that I can say of this is that someone, somewhere, took this to heart then I could say, perhaps audaciously, that my talent was teaching. And even should I not be chosen today, that is more of a reward than any real martial-artist could ever ask for.
