Loma Records
Loma is a record label from 1960's Los Angeles. It encompasses "uptown" soul music, Blues, R&B and more. I like Loma so much that I've created a site about it - www.lomarecords.com. The site features quality record scans of original Loma 45's from the 1960's, label data and a few sound clips.
Loma may be an obscure record label to some, and possibly very anoraky, but it's well known to others, particularly those with an interest in Northern Soul, Blues, R&B, 60's "Garage" and psychedelic sounds. All in all, Loma offers the music lover and collector an interesting and eclectic mix of tunes and styles.
In 1964, Warner Bros brought in Bob Krasnow - formerly a promotions man for the King record label (the then home of James Brown). Loma was Warner's attempt to cash in on the burgeoning teen market, and specifically the "race" sector.
The label met with fairly poor results - the majority of the releases not even registering on the Billboard charts. Acknowledging this, the label also tried to broaden its appeal by releasing records aimed more at a young, white audience. However, Loma continued to put out "uptown soul" and R&B tracks .
Loma's attempts to musically please everyone saw them release a handful of R&B and blues tunes (James Cotton, Smiley Lewis and others), but also one country and western single (Don Crawford), a couple of beat group 45's that were recorded in Ireland (The Belfast Gipsies), and a psychedelic prog/rock single (John Wonderling).
In the main though, history remembers Loma for it's soul and dance music, and for many names such as The Apollas, Carl Hall, The Olympics, Ben Aiken, The Teen Turbans and The Soul Shakers are synonymous with Loma Records.
The first Loma single came out in September 1964, and the last was four years later, in September 1968. In that time the label released 106 singles. Here then, to give you a taste of the label and its output, and to stimulate the musical senses, are a few sound-clips of Loma recordings from Little Jerry Williams, The Enchanters, Ike and Tina Turner, Bobby Bennett and the Dynamics, The Marvellos, The Apollas, Ben Aiken, Linda Jones, Roy Redmond, Lonnie Youngblood and John Wonderling.

Very few of the artists that recorded on Loma were ever captured on film. To the best of my knowledge just three performances exist. Here's one of them - THE OLYMPICS - GOOD LOVIN'. The track was released on Loma 2013 in March of 1965. Supporting the group is Billy Preston on the organ. Enjoy!
Here's another clip, this one features the girl group THE DOLLS. The group hailed from Texas and the song featured - THE REASON WHY - was first issued on the TOY record label before being picked up by Loma in March 1966 (the date given on the clip is incorrect). The song was written and produced by Dale Hawkins of SUZIE Q fame.
Here's the third offering and another girl group. This time it's THE APOLLAS (and not 'Appollas' as set in the titles). The song is YOU'RE ABSOLUTELY RIGHT, and was released on Loma in September 1965. The footage comes from episode 42 of the American TV programme SHIVAREE and was broadcast nationally on 13th November 1965.
If you know of any other video clips of Loma artists performing, do get in touch and let me know and do make sure you pay a visit to www.lomarecords.com...
