  • Bio

Dave Ferguson's solo show, uses only harmonica, human beat-box and vocals, recording live loops and then layering and building those loops to construct a song… nothing is pre-recorded. Doing mainly originals and some Blues/Americana and other unexpected surprises thrown in for good measure. Genre classification would have to be something like "Trans-Blues & Country-Dub". ............................................................................................................................................................................ Although it's a solo act it's not your typical singer-song-whiner type show, expect more in your face dance-style grooves served up in a Deep-South style............................................................................................................................................................................. Harmonica player Dave Ferguson has been playing extensively in and around Cape Town and beyond since the early 90s as well as a 12 year stint in the UK (including Nashville, Memphis, Australia & others). Other international live and session work has been with UK Alt. Country fore-runners The Arlenes, Emily Barker, Sophia, John Townes Van Zandt, Mickey Harte (album went double platinum), Lucky Oceans (Asleep at the Wheel, The Zydecats), Dave Clarke and Winston Delandro (Blues of Cain, Shaka Kahn, Joan Armatrading and Bob Marley), Brian Robertson (Thin Lizzy), Jimmy Dludlu, Prime Circle, Taxi Violence, Bed on bricks, A-King, Red Earth and Rust, Valiant Swart, Ollie Viljoen etc............................................................................................................................................................................................................................................................................ Early 2007 saw the launch of his solo show arising from a close association with his good friend Benjamin Darvill (aka Son of Dave). This enabled Ferguson to find a voice and created a vehicle for songwriting with an unique sound & approach which has led to a growing cult following. Dave Ferguson has taken his solo show all over South Africa (as well as Namibia, London and Italy) including all the major South African Rock & Blues Festivals (Oppikoppi, Splashy Fen, Up The Creek, Rocking The Daisies, The Table Mountain Blues Summit, Voodoo Lounge Blues Fest, Big Blues and even the two main Trance festivals: Earthdance and Rezonance).................................................................................................................................................................. Ferguson also opened for The Lemonhead's Evan Dando, Gemma Ray & Candye Cane, he played with Michelle Shocked on her last SA tour, he even did a private performance at the request of the Counting Crows while they were on tour............................................................................................................................................................................... Dave has an endorsement with Seydel Harmonicas and has done a live looping clinic for Boss to launch their new RC-30 pedal............................................................................................................................................................................. PRESS CLIPPINGS:.................................................................................................................................................................... "LONESOME DAVE, A ONE-MAN-MUSIC-MAVERICK THAT SENDS YOU INTO A TIMEWARP OF WARM, DEEP SOUTHERN SOUL, BLUES & COUNTRY SOUNDS, MIXED UP WITH A GOOD MEASURE OF FOOTSTOMPING DUB FUNK AND DANCESTYLE GROOVES. RAW, RETRO-FUTURISTIC GENIUS…" – Heartbeat cover story issue 02 2011.............................................................................................................................................................................. "DAVE FERGUSON IS KNOWN FOR HAVING LEARNT THE HARMONICA ON ANOTHER PLANET." -Mahala.co.za February 15th, 2010 by Jannike Bergh............................................................................................................................................................................ "THOSE WHO HAVE SEEN DAVE FERGUSON PLAY LIVE, SPEAK WITH AWE IN HUSHED, YET ANIMATED TONES OF ADMIRATION. IT'S A STYLE THAT'S TARANTINOESQUE IN IT'S COMPLEX SIMPLICITY... - Aidan Harper, MyMusicMatrix.com 2010.............................................................................................................................................................................. "HE MOVES LIKE A MAN POSSESSED BY HIS OWN ART, HE DELIVERS THE WORD HALLELUJAH IN A WAY THAT I'VE NEVER HEARD BEFORE BUT BELIEVE HIM MORE THAN I BELIEVE ALL OTHERS THAT CAME BEFORE HIM... HE LOOKS THE BUSINESS. HE SOUNDS THE BUSINESS. HE DELIVERS THE BUSINESS. LAST NIGHT I WAS IN THE PRESENCE OF GENIUS. TODAY, YESTERDAYAND TOMORROW, I AM RICHER FOR IT." - 24.com review of Levi's Vintage Sundays 2010 ............................................................................................................................................................................. "SOME PEOPLE CAN'T MAKE DECENT MUSIC IF THEY ROPE IN A HANDFUL OF MATES & CALL THEMSELVES A BAND. OTHERS, MEANWHILE, MUST HAVE DONE SOMETHING RIGHT IN A PAST LIFE, AS THEY GET IMBUED WITH THE TALENT OF HALF AN ORCHESTRA.... DAVE FERGUSON FALLS INTO THE LATTER CATEGORY." SL Magazine May 2009.............................................................................................................................................................................. " HE IS NOT A SOLO SINGER, BUT HE IS ALONE. HE IS A WHOLE BAND ALL BY HIMSELF. WITH A BRIEFCASE FULL OF HARMONICAS... HE PRODUCES SUBLIME SOUTHERN SOUL AND BLUES SONGS THAT JUST RIP YOU APART." -- Justice Malala, Financial Mail 2009.............................................................................................................................................................................. "DAVE FERGUSON OPENED FOR EVAN DANDO AND HAD THE COUNTING CROWS OFFER CASH DOLLARS TO EXTEND HIS SET...NOT BAD FOR ONE MAN AND A HARMONICA" -- Evan Milton, Obrigado Magazine 2008.............................................................................................................................................................................. "A DUSTY MARS AMPLIFIER SITS ALONE ON A CHAIR, AND THEN IS JOINED ONSTAGE BY A SHARP-DRESSED MAN. HE CLEARS HIS THROAT AND SNIFFS TWICE, THE SOUND OF THROAT-CLEARING AND SNIFFING REPEATING, RHYTHMICALLY, THROUGH THE SPEAKERS. IT'S A BEAT! THEN COMES A BASS LINE. THEN COMES THE HARMONICA. THEN COMES DAVE FERGUSON'S SONG, RAW, DUSTY AND TREMENDOUS" -- The Big Issue Cover story August 2008..............................................................................................................................................................................
