About me:
.. ..

(Layout provided by Mike Industries.)

We opened our doors August 25, 2003 as the 5th college in the Lone Star College System. Before January 2008 we were known as Cy-Fair College with the North Harris Montgomery Community College District.

Today, we are educating more then 12,000 students in a wide variety of programs and classes. Lone Star College System is an open-enrollment community college system. That means we accept all students once their application has been submitted.

Student activities are another source of education and involvement on our campus. With more then 40 active clubs, there is something of interest for most students.

Our beautifully landscaped campus, helps to establish us as part of the original Katy Texas Prairie. The sparkling lake that runs through our campus is not only decorative, but also serves for flood control and irrigation.

Our campus' modern architecture and classroom design, mixed with the use of interior and exterior space all helps to make our college an innovative and exciting place to learn.

This weekend from Thursday April 16 to Sunday April 19, Lone Star College Cy Fair hosted “Constant Star,” by Tazewell Thompson and directed by Ron Jones in collaboration with the Ensemble Theater. According the Lone Star website, “this powerful bio-drama is a bold look at the life of civil rights pioneer, suffragette and outspoken activist Ida B. Wells, a passionate, fiery champion of equality for women and black Americans.” Ida B. Wells was born of slaves, went to college, became a galvanizing journalist, made history by filing the first civil rights lawsuit, co-founded the NAACP (National Association for the Advancement of Colored People), worked with Susan B. Anthony for the women's vote, was married and had six children. In the play, Wells was portrayed by 5 different actresses who each portrayed a unique characteristic of Wells. Also, two of those actresses, Roenia Thompson and Cynthia Brown made their main stage day view with the Ensemble Theater here at the College. The play also featured five-part a cappella spirituals, such as "Deep River" and "Balm in Gilead," which showed both African-American roots and their desire for justice. Lone Star College did a wonderful job of collaborating with the Ensemble Theater because they provided an excellent play of the forgotten civil rights heroine, Ida B. Wells.

Constant Star- Ida B.
Wells story

This Thursday April the 16 2009, I had the honor of attending one of the most exquisite plays that celebrates a tenacious woman that, raised her voice and left a legacy of braveness and remarkable achievements: Ida B. Wells. In collaboration with The Ensemble Theatre, the Lone Star College Cy-Fair Center for the Arts Main Stage Theatre presented “CONSTANT STAR- IDA B. WELLS STORY” by Tazewell Thompson and Directed by our very own LSC- Cy-Fair Director of Theatre Ron Jones. The time and setting are: A story telling place; The office of Free Speech, Memphis, Tennessee; 1863-1931. The vivacious and well selected cast conformed by Roenia Thompson (Ida B. Wells #1), Detria Marie Ward (Ida B. Wells #2), Cynthia Brown (Ida B. Wells #3), Shaunyce Omar (Ida B. Wells #4) and Jo Anne Davis-Jones (Ida B. Wells #5) made the night shine to all its glory. With incredible and unique voices these talented ladies filled the Main Stage theater with energy and passion as the unique play needed five actresses to interpret the restless character.

One thing I enjoyed and figure some didn’t take the time to appreciate is the Director’s notes about this unique event:
“I am particularly proud of the collaboration between The Ensemble Theatre and Lone Star Cy-Fair, that makes this production possible. The First such co-production involving a Lone star College and a professional theatre, the collaboration provides the unique opportunity for theatre students to work with theatre professionals while earning college credit. This unique learning experience will undoubtedly be a memorable one for this group of dedicated students.”
I would like to congratulate everybody that had a part in this marvelous event which brought much pride to us in LSC Cy-Fair.
Way to go!

A first for Cy-Fair College! On the nights of April 16th through the 19th Tazewell Thompson’s Constant Star was presented in the Main Stage Theatre in collaboration with The Ensemble Theatre!! A FIRST,
Constant Star was the first play that was presented with the collaboration with the Ensemble Theatre. I attended the preview night and I must say that it seemed like opening night with the actor’s flawless performance. The play was about the life of Civil Rights Pioneer and an American Heroine, Ida B. Wells. The daughter of freed slaves she was also a co founder of the NCAAP and led the anti-lynching campaign. Ida B. Wells was also the editor and publisher of a newspaper were her outspoken reached her audience. The play was put on by five actors Cynthia Brown (Ida B. Wells #3), Jo Anne Davis (Ida B. Wells #5), Shaunyce Omar(Ida B. Wells #4), and Roenia Thompson (Ida B. Wells #1) Who all had beautiful voices! Tazewell Thompson has received 5 NAACP, 9 Barrymore and 3 Carbonell Awards with Constant Star. I left the play understanding the strength and courage of Ida B. Wells and how she helped lead the anti-lynching mob in America. And I am sure that any one else who was able to attend walked out understanding who Wells fought for. Special thank to the Ensemble Theatre, we look forward to future collaborations as this first one was really good! Thanks also go out to Cy-Fair and Ron Jones who directed the play and dedicated Thursday nights performance to his colleague who passed away Mr. Robert McGehee, May he Rest in Peace.

This past week two successful events took place on campus. On Wednesday April 8 the talent show took place. The talent show this year had a Vegas showcase theme. The attendees had a chance to play several casino games an hour before the talent show began. Attendants played for raffle tickets for different theme baskets that were raffled. The more games the attendants played the more tickets they could win and the better chance they had to win one of the baskets of their choice. From talking to some contestants, most liked more than one basket and put some of their tickets toward each basket. Games included craps, roulette, black jack and a spinning wheel. Everyone was welcome to play; this was not a typical casino atmosphere where you have to be 18 years of age to play. Also your typical Vegas rules were not in effect, instead different rules were in effect to make it easier for the younger crowd to play. The actual talent show was full of different acts, from singing to dancing and they all performed well! A special appearance was made by Zoolander from 104.1 krbe. Zoolander use to attend Cy-Fair and came back to give away prizes and entertain the crowd. The various theme baskets were given raffled throughout the show. I actually had the pleasure go onstage and raffle two of these baskets. For most of the show I was backstage helping out, and I got to see what went on backstage. I also want to add that admission was totally free, the games were also free to play and Cy-Fair provided free refreshments during a brief intermission. THANK YOU CY-FAIR. Another successful event that took place the very next night was a poetry slam! Performers from area colleges and universities and the community were at hand competing. Judges were professors, community members and students who used and adaptation of National Poetry Slam rules. The atmosphere was a coffee house setting and the poem styles ranged from vibrant, hip-hop style flow to rhyme and rhythm.

To be a poet is to think, live and express yourself in a completely different level. Your senses are perceptive, your language reflects it and your world is one of a kind. This is what I learned this past Thursday, April the 9th at the “Poetry Slam” held at the conference center of LSC-CyFair that went on from 7:00pm-9:00pm. The excitement was perceived as each contestant shared their emotions, thoughts and reflexions. I had never attended a poetry slam in my life and though my original incentive was a few points for extra credit in my current speech class with Professor Stacy Gresell, whom we saw going back and forth from the judges table to the stage to announce every poet, my experience was one of a kind. I had forgotten the peculiarity of a poem that comes from the heart, and these poets whom I cannot refer to as anything but due to their unique talent and levels of preparedness and professionalism. Their outstanding performances made share their emotions, thoughts and perspective as each of them would take over the mic that helped them bring life to an expectant crowed that at times thought snapping their fingers was not enough and would let a cheer and round of applause escape form their hands. At the end of the night, 3 participants went home with a prize: 3rd Place was for “Red”, 2nd Place was for “Blessed Empress” and the so desired 1st place for “Trademark.
” Kudos to these promising talents of LSC-CyFair, very well done!

This past Wednesday, April 08, 2009, Student Activities had the Las Vegas Showcase Talent Show, and might I say, it was a great success. From 6 to 8 the Center of Arts Lobby was full with guest from all over the community enjoying the free casino games. The Student Ambassadors who dressed up like casino host, the two blackjack tables, two roulette tables, and two crabs tables really gave emphasized the “Las Vegas Showcase” theme. And that’s not all, people who played these games won raffle tickets for a chance to win different basket prizes, like one with different car care products, and another with body lotions and soaps. The best part was the actual talent show. Johnny Walker, a comedian was the host, and he really got the crowd laughing throughout the night. The contestants of the show were all very impressive and poured their hearts out once they were in the stage. There were singers, dancers (which included some ballot and salsa), and a couple musicians. The crowd was also very respectful and really cheered on the contestants, which made it easier on them to perform. Plus during intermission, some fruit snacks and cookies were provided for them to enjoy. The night finally ended by awarding the winners, thanking the supporters and finally cleaning up.

As I mentioned in my last blog the Women’s month came to conclusion last week. On Tuesday March 31st the closing ceremony was held. The ceremony was held in the commons and was from 10:30 till noon. The closing ceremony was kicked off by Celia Barnes who thanked everyone who made the events possible and who contributed their time. Following this the winners for the 2009 women’s month essay contest were presented onstage where they each read their essays. Each winner received a certificate and gift card to a bookstore. Each of the contestant winners received a full round of applause from the audience. Well deserved as each essay was great and expressed their feelings on how women have the right to be equally treated to men. After the contestants read their essays they were given one more round of applause and they were snapped in some pictures holding up their certificates and girt cards. The ceremony then came to a conclusion and cupcakes and lemonade were handed out to guests. Women’s month t shirts were also for sale during the ceremony at $12 each. I had the opportunity to speak with one of the essay contest winners, Maria Ferrera who said she entered the contest as a way to receive extra credit from her English teacher. Here is a small excerpt from her essay

"As a young college student, fresh out of high school, all these changes in history by historical women have influenced my individual life. Yet to reach two decades of life, I have seen enough to know how my life is influenced by other women’s actions. Personally I am an independent lady, pay my own bills and take responsibility for my own actions. The choices I make in life such as to further my education and work a full time job are all results of the hard work, dedication and struggle’s others before I went through to specifically change my life.
As a woman, I have the right to have a job, and not forced to stay home, the right to go to school for a degree, right to vote, speak my mind freely and

Bella

Bella,
como en la piedra fresca
del manantial, el agua
abre un ancho relámpago de espuma,
así es la sonrisa en tu rostro,
bella.
Bella,
de finas manos y delgados pies
como un caballito de plata,
andando, flor del mundo,
así te veo,
bella.
Bella,
con un nido de cobre enmarañado
en tu cabeza, un nido
color de miel sombría
donde mi corazón arde y reposa,
bella.
Bella,
bella.
Bella, mi bella,
tu voz, tu piel, tus uñas,
bella, mi bella,
tu ser, tu luz, tu sombra,
bella,
todo eso es mío, bella,
todo eso es mío, mía,
cuando andas o reposas,
cuando cantas o duermes,
cuando sufres o sueñas,
siempre,
cuando estás cerca o lejos,
siempre,
eres mía, mi bella,
siempre.

Did you know that in October 30, 1938, a sixty minute radio broadcast shook the nation into a scare? “War of the Worlds” is not just another film produced by Steven Spielberg, its also what the CBS radio network said that was going on over a radio broadcast. This past Wednesday, April 1, 2009, Lone Star College had a small play of the broadcast and then a discussion of its impact. The broadcast was based on H. G. Wells' novel The War of the Worlds. It is over some aliens from Mars invading the United States and attacking the human race, and a news reporter is telling the audience first hand what is going on. What makes this interesting is that people actually started to believe it was true. What I learned in the discussion is that many variables influenced that. Back then, people used their leisure time to listen to the radio, so it had much influence on them. Also, some didn’t tune in at the beginning where the audience was told it was going to be fake, so they believed it. Plus, the program went on without any commercial interruption, so the audience thought it had to be true. Honestly, the only knowledge I had of this was the 2005 movie, but this small play and discussion gave me a little bit more of interesting knowledge, not just about History, but about the nature of humans.

This past Thursday, March 27, 2009, Phi Theta Kappa had its induction ceremony in Lone Star College Cy Fair. Phi Theta Kappa is the international honor society for the two year college, and according to a PTK official at the induction, this has been one of the largest inductions ever, there was even a shortage of seats and some parents had to give them up for the inductees. The evening began with a little background to this prestigious organization. Also, a previous PTK member spoke to the inductees about her experience as a member and how it affected her when she moved on to a university. Then, each inductee was called on, as well as their major and any people they would like to thank for helping them succeed in college. As they got called on, they received a white rose, symbolizing the purity and beauty of life, and with its white buds signifying intellectual associations. The inductees also signed their name into the PTK book. A pretty neat thing PTK did was give award certificates not to the inductees, but to the teachers and staff the inductees felt helped them succeed in college. Then, the night ended with lots of pictures and delicious cake. This just shows you how great of a school Lone Star College Cy-Fair is, helping students (like for example one women with six kids, who made the crowd clap and cheer) achieve their goals.

health fair at cy fair

Celebrating women’s month in March Cy Fair College had a health fair along with health speakers from the community. There were a total of four speakers that shared their time with students and members from around the campus. Their purpose was to bring awareness of diseases such as breast cancer. The other part of the health fair was held in front of the circulation desk in the library. This was more of self serve. The health fair consisted of several fold out cardboard displays, that were welcoming for readers interested in subjects such as nutrition, exercise, family care just to name a few. Student ambassadors were on hand assisting with the health fair, helping give out brochures and encouraging people passing by to come take advantage of the free information. Loads of free information was available in the forms of pamphlets and brochures. One of the foldouts talked about the food pyramid and how to incorporate the guidelines into your diet. A really helpful website that was actually on the foldout as well as in the food pyramid brochures was mypyramid.gov.
This is the official food pyramid website where one can learn more on how to follow and how to meet the guidelines

According to figures provided by the Red Cross, approximately 32,000 pints of blood are used every day in the United States. Other figures state that although 60% of adults are eligible to donate blood, only 5% do regularly. What might help push these numbers is that most people squirm at the sight or thought of getting poked in the arm by a needle! After all it is really easy and simple to do! Blood donation is often referred to “as the gift that keeps on giving” and “the gift of life”. It is estimated that every three minutes someone needs a blood transfusion (according to lifeblood.org) Last Friday students, staff and people in the community had the opportunity to donate blood. A mobile blood donation vehicle was on campus from 8:30 until 2:30 collecting blood from anyone that meet the requirements of a healthy individual. I, myself donated blood for the first time. I must admit I was nervous at first but I knew I would be helping someone. The process began with a short physical. They take your temperature, weight (you must be a minimum of 110lbs) blood pressure and temperature. At this time they also take a sample from your finger to check if your iron levels are high enough. After this you will be asked a series of questions to determine if you are eligible to safely donate blood. Things like if you have been sick lately, what foreign countries you have visited recently, if you have any tattoos or piercings. Next is the actual process of donating! You will be asked to lay down in a reclining chair. The nurse will then strap a cuff on your arm (like the one you use to take your blood pressure) and give you a ball to squeeze. They will clean your arm and locate your vein and poke you with a needle! But to worry this pain will only last a second or two and is well worth it! This will take about 15-20 minutes depending on your type of donation. A typical donation is about a pint which is equivalent of 1/10th of the blood in your body.
The next step is recovery! Yo

On March 2, 2009, Lone Star College- Cy Fair held its Opening Ceremony honoring Women’s Month, which was sponsored by Windows On the World. This years theme is “Breaking Boundaries: Contributions of Women-Past, Present and Future.” The ceremony was held at the Main Stage Theater and Lobby in the Center of the Arts where many non profit organizations where there showing their support. For example, Phi Theta Kappa was selling shirts and bracelets that said the word “women” in the six most common languages at Lone Star. Other organizations like Avon where there presenting information and resources over many issues pertaining to women. The actual Presentation was very interesting. For example, I learned that Women’s Month is a product of hard work- that this celebration actually started as a club, then went to be a small event serving punch during lunch, to dedicating a whole month to women. Also, many speakers were there to share their wonderful accomplishments. For example, Chief Justice of the Fifth District Court of Appeals, Linda Thomas, shared her story of how she went from being a secretary to the court’s first female chief justice.
The love and appreciation for women was really felt, especially when some females played an outstanding piece (which was composed by a woman) using the violin, cello, and piano. All throughout the month there will be different events honoring Women’s Month, so just keep an ear out.

What a Marvelous Play!!!

On Saturday evening I had the pleasure of attending The Importance of Being Earnest presented by the Lone Star College-Cy Fair Theatre. This was the first play I attended at Cy Fair and I must say that I totally enjoyed it! The play was fantastic. The play had the audience laughing throughout the performance. The importance of Being Earnest is a play that was written by Oscar Wilde and was first debuted on February 14 1895 in London. Many believe that the debuting night of this performance was the climax in Wilde’s career. And I can see why, I believe any one can enjoy this play. Some of the characters in this play are Algernon Moncrieff, Jack Worthing, Lady Bracknell, Gwendolyn Fairfax, Cecily Cardew, Miss Prism, and Lane. The Plot consists of Algernon pretending to have a friend named Earnest that lives in the country who he often likes to visit. On the other hand Algernon’s friend Jack Worthing, who lives in the country, also has a fake brother by the name of Earnest who he also visits often. Algernon discovers Jack’s real identity when he leaves his silver cigarette case behind and finds inscriptions from Jack’s ward. So then Jack is forced to come clean about his double identity and explains that he has a ward back in the country. Jack decides to come clean and get rid of his other identity, Earnest as he wants to marry Algernon’s cousin Gwendolyn. Jack then stumbles upon two obstacles, one is that Gwendolyn seems to like Jack because of his fake name of Earnest. The second obstacle is Gwendolyn’s mother does not approve of Jack because he is adopted and was discovered in a handbag in a train station when he was a baby. In the other hand Jacks description of his young ward, Cecily appealed to Algernon and he is eager to meet her. Algernon goes to Jacks country house and presents himself as Earnest. Moments before this happened Jack arrives and has informed everyone that his brother Earnest has passed away.
Algernon then gets to meet

"The Importance of being Earnest.
"

Bright lights, stage set and an expectant audience brought excitement to my Saturday night on March the 7th at 8:00pm. “The Importance of Being Earnest” (February 26th - March 8th 2009) is a marvelous play I had never heard of, but undoubtedly enjoyed from beginning to the end. With a remarkable cast and an amazing preparation, this play really exceeded my own personal expectations. The fifteen minute intermissions were unbearable since my complete attention was devoted to the unique talent blend of Sheryl Croix (as Lady Bracknell), Steward D. Gaitan (as John Worthing ‘Jack’), Brandon Wernick (as AlgernonMoncrieff), Sean Dalton (as Reverend Canon Chausable), Genevive Simmons (as Miss Merriman), Chase Kinsella (as Lane), Jenna Simmons (as Gwendolyn Fairfax), Becca Rolater (as Cecily Cardew), Elizabeth Scholl (as Miss Prism) and Juan Lerma (Stage Manager and also as the Footman). Proudly I have to say that our students did a very outstanding performance, and not only the cast but the creative team along with director Clair Hart-Palumbo. Not only we had a good time enjoying the play, but they provided with cookies and coffee during intermissions, which kind of helped the waiting, although I have to say I am truly delighted with these talents that simply invite me to expect greater things from the Lone Star College-CyFair Theatre department. Wish them the best of lucks in all their future performances and thank them for an astounding experience.

But the thing is many would be surprised when they actually learn that they may qualify even when they thought they would not be able to qualify. There is only one way to find out if you qualify and that is to sit down and fill out the application whether it is on paper or online. Once you do start filing out the application you have a chance about finding out about all the different scholarships that are floating out there. Refer to the Student Service Desk for more information on FAFSA help and scholarship information. Phi Theta Kappa

Phi Theta Kappa, or PTK, is an international Honor Society that recognizes student's academic achievements in two year colleges. This past Tuesday, PTK had its New Member Orientation, where the student's that got invited got more information over the organization. Being a Phi Theta Kappa member has many benefits. For example, members are automatically distinguished, meaning they have a very good chance of getting accepted into a University. Plus, members get special transfer scholarships that other people don't have access to. Another neat thing of being a member is that a member can get special discounts from Top Companies like T-Mobile or Dell, the President, Nicole Howard, even said she was offered a five thousand dollar discount on a brand new Ford Truck. Having access to all these benefits doesn't just come from academic achievement but from leadership and service as well. For example, this past Saturday (2/28/09) PTK took part in "Adopt a Highway" over at Huffmeister and Spring Cypress. The members worked about two long hours cleaning up both sides of about a mile strip of road, finding anything from cigarette buds, to pieces of plastic, to even some car debris. Finally, PTK will be having its Induction Ceremony on Thursday, March 26, 2009 where the invited students can oficially be in the Organization.

Valentine's Day at Lone Star College

Need any ideas on how to tell that special someone how you feel? Do you need a way to get “the message” across? Well Lone Star College can help! On February 12, Lone Star College hosted a special Valentines Day celebration for everybody at the campus. Around 11 o’clock, SGA had a General Assembly where they talked about student topics and student’s had the chance to ask the SGA officers questions. By participating in this assembly you were given a ticket which you could redeem to be able to stuff a bear. I thought it was pretty cool how you were also given a “birth certificate” of the bear where you could name it. In addition, there was a table set up with many different supplies so that you can create a special and unique valentine’s card for that special someone. Also, the open karaoke machine kept the ambiance alive with many groovy songs and the people singing them really entertained the crowd. You could have also cherished the moment by taking a picture with a loving other in a Heart cut out. Another thing people really enjoyed was the cookie decorating. That’s right, you were given a plain sugar cookie, some frosting, sprinkles, sugar, chocolate chip, and the rest was up to you. You could have simply put some frosting to add some flavor, or artistically decorated it to give it to that special someone. However you went about it, it all brought in that Valentine’s sprit within the college and to the students.
