Synopsis:
On a beautiful morning in June 2006, lifelong bicyclist Pearson Constantino was riding on a suburban road when he was struck from behind by an SUV. He suffered crippling injuries including a shattered femur, a crushed lumbar vertebra and severe head trauma; his helmet saved his life. The driver fled the scene.
After two surgeries and nine days in the hospital Pearson, broken but unbowed, resolved not only to get back on his bike but to fulfill his dream of riding across America. During his painful rehabilitation Pearson learned that more than 44000 cyclists are injured by cars in the United States each year and he began advocating for programs and legislation that would increase the safety of cyclists and pedestrians on the roads.
In August 2008, although still plagued by constant pain in his back and hip and lingering memory loss, Pearson and his brother Pete rode across historic US Route 20. Route 20 is the longest and one of the oldest transcontinental roads in the United States. Their journey across Main Street America began in Newport, Oregon and ended 3400 miles east in Cape Cod, Massachusetts. This route allowed them to interact with a wide variety of people. Along the way they met with fellow cyclists and gave presentations at schools and community groups; motivating others to start bicycling and encouraging drivers to share the roads. Their trip was filled with challenges and humor including inclement weather, unexpected mountains, accidents, inhospitable road conditions, encounters with characters and bicycle breakdowns. Pearson and Pete are charismatic and sincere and have a great rapport.
The documentary, “The Long Bike Back”, is a portrait of Pearson's heroic odyssey from the hit-and-run accident through his recovery and his quest with Pete to ride across the United States. The film highlights their unrelenting drive to get their message out to America—to have everyone experience the joy and freedom of riding a bicycle and to spare others the trauma caused by reckless drivers. Not only will the film be about Pearson and Pete’s personal journey but also about the greatness of America from the Pacific Coast to the Atlantic Coast, from the natural wonders of Yellowstone to the big cities of Chicago and Boston, from mighty Mississippi River to the calm of the Finger Lakes; it is a road trip film. “The Long Bike Back” will showcase the spirit of resilience and overcoming of obstacles, the true spirit of America.

Thanks for adding me as a MySpace friend. Congrats on the trip. Just finished reading the blog. Along with bicycle touring, Pearson and I have something else in common (a damaged L2 vertabrae). It was interesting the both of our trips going eastward started in Oregon. I left Portland, Oregon June 3rd but I rode up to Seattle, Washington before heading eastward. I arrived in Washington, D.C. August 19th (of course I actually started the trip in Americus, Georgia March 03rd and ended the trip back in Americus, Georgia Sept. 08th). I wish that the film goes well. I loved the trailer. I'll be praying for you. Take care and keep PEDALing (Pray Every Day And Listen(ing)).
Just want to say I hope you guys are still having a safe trip and the best of LUCK Take care and Have a good weekend From a Fan of Caseys in EARLY IOWA
