Long Hunter State Park is 2,900-acre park located along the shores of Percy Priest Lake near Nashville, TN. It consists of four main units: Couchville, Baker's Grove, Bryant Grove and Sellar's Farm. Hiking, picnicking, swimming, canoeing, mountain biking, backpacking, fishing, nature photography and wildlife observation are among the activities available to park visitors. The park has nearly 25 miles of hiking trails, including a 4.5-mile mountain bike trail which will be expanded to 10 miles in the near future.
The Couchville Cedar Glade Trail visits a rare, desert-like environment known as the cedar glades. Long Hunter's cedar glades are home to many unique plant species, including the federally protected Tennessee Coneflower (Echinacea tennesseensis), a species once thought to be extinct.
The newest addition to Long Hunter State Park is Sellar's Farm State Archaeological Area, which features one of the best preserved Native American mounds/villages in the U.S.
Planned activities at Long Hunter State Park include interpretive and recreational programs for the general public (see the blog section above for the seasonal program schedule) and environmental education programs for school and other interested groups.
Long Hunter also features picnic shelters, a volleyball court, playgrounds, a swimming beach at the Bryant Grove area, a meeting facility/conference room, a group camp, and two boat-launching ramps on 14,000-acre Percy Priest Lake. Rental boats and canoes are available at 110-acre Couchville Lake during the summer-use season. There is no launch ramp on Couchville Lake for private boats.
The park hosts various events throughout the year, including the Halloween 5K Run, the Fat Tire Mountain Bike Festival, and the annual NAIA Pow Wow, the largest pow wow east of the Mississippi.
The main entrance to the park is located at 2910 Hobson Pike, Hermitage, TN 37076. Directions: From Nashville, take I-40 East to Mt. Juliet Road, Exit 226-A. Go south (right) 6.2 miles to the main park entrance. Or, take I-24 east to Old Hickory Boulevard, Exit 62. Go north (left) on SR171 6.4 miles to the main park entrance.
The park is open year-round from 7 a.m. to sunset.
Hi there! My wife and I hiked the Bryant Grove Trail yesterday, to Bryant Grove parking lot and back. Very beautiful. However, I think we need a work day with about 10 folks out there with garbage bags. There was so much trash. I was amazed and shocked. It started with one water bottle and then just piles of trash, which I suppose was washed up from the Lake. My brother always hikes with a garbage bag. I think I am going to have to do the same. But I'll tell you, there was more than one hefty bag of trash along that beautiful trail.
That's pretty awesome. I'll have to come see it. People will start asking, "Why did you rebuild the pier?"
I'm still shocked about the tiny lady being real...She may remember me and Angie bolting, and Jason chatting her up. Or she won't be real at all this year. Ya know they gotta keep shocking people somehow.
Finally...open / concealed carry permits are now legal in TN parks. ;(
Looking forward to the Froggie hike tonight. Should I pack my piece? I hear the Peepers can get a lil hornery this time of year LOL. Bad joke I know...
I did call my senators and the finance committee earlier to voice my dissent w/ them trying to block the proposed $6 mil for state park infrastructure. Like you guys dont have enough on your plate to deal with already without an influx of "praise the lord and pass the ammunition" types. What Would Jesus Pack? ;)
Hey I don't know if you heard about the eagle at Radnor Lake, my daughter and I went for a short trail hike out there, (we live close-by) and one of the forest rangers pointed him out to us sitting waaay up in a tree..He was gorgeous! If only I'd had a telephoto lens on my camera, I did get a photo of him, but it is not very clear, I hope he gets where he is going ok! thank you for your awesome site! My girls and I want to come to LHSP to hike real soon! We just have to coordinate the time ~ so many differant events going on in a family..byeee for now..
