The Lookalikes (USA) formed in Oberlin, Ohio, in 1989. They quickly moved to Seattle, Washington, where they made their debut performance covering Smokey Robinson's ultra-vulnerable "Virgin Man" to a bewildered, Grunge-oriented audience. Over the next four years they recorded their only full-length album, "Life-o-phobia," which is considered a "Late Early-Period Antifolk and Mid-LoFi Classic" by a few nice people who live in New York and Europe. The album alternates pretty, quiet songs about existential paralysis with somewhat noisier avant-garde tape-pieces and a miniature folk-rock-opera of sorts, "The Authority Trilogy."
Steve moved to Brooklyn, NY, and Alex moved to Boulder, CO, so they only give concerts once every 3 or 4 blue moons. Both continue to write and perform in their home towns.
Alex recently wrote and recorded a song cycle from the point of view of a housewife in Colorado. Rumor has it that a friend of the duo is recording a cover version of the whole project (details to follow....)
Three of the songs here were recorded in Seattle in a 1-hour, live-in-the-studio session in December 2001, during one of their rare reunions. Since they doubt they will get to record another full album together any time soon, they have decided to make these songs available here. Enjoy!
We should not be confused with the
Lookalikes of Dublin, a historically crucial power-pop band from the late 70's--> 80's that we were ignorant of in our youth (we were ignorant of a lot of things). The (Dublin)
Lookalikes loomed large in the early U2 story, and had hits and everything.
